Ghostlight Records, a division of Sh-K-Boom Records, will release the cast recording of The 25th Annual Putnam County
Spelling Bee on May 31st, to
coincide with the first day of the National Spelling Bee Finals in
Washington DC.The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee features music and lyrics
by Tony Award winner William Finn and a book by Rachel Sheinkin. Conceived
by Rebecca Feldman, the show is orchestrated by Michael Starobin, features musical direction by Vadim Feichtner, and is directed by James Lapine. The album was
produced by Kurt Deutsch, President of Ghostlight Records, along with Grammy-winner Joel Moss. The cast features Derrick Baskin as Mitch Mahoney, Deborah S. Craig as
Marcy Park, Jesse Tyler Ferguson as Leaf Coneybear, Dan Fogler as
William Barfee, Lisa Howard as Rona Lisa Peretti, Celia Keenan-Bolger
as Olive Ostrovsky, Jose Llana as Chip Tolentino, Jay Reiss as Douglas
Panch, and Sarah Saltzberg as Logainne Schwartzandgrubenierre.As described in the press release, "In The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, six young people in
the throes of puberty, overseen by grown-ups who barely managed to
escape childhood themselves, learn that winning isn't everything and
that losing doesn't necessarily make you a loser"
The show, which Charles Isherwood of The New York Times called "irresistible and lovable," has been nominated for six Tony Awards: Best Musical, Best
Score of a Musical for William Finn, Best Book of a Musical for Rachel
Sheinkin, Best Director of a Musical for James Lapine, Outstanding
Featured Actress in a Musical for Celia Keenan-Bolger, and Outstanding
Featured Actor in a Musical for Dan Fogler. Spelling Bee also received 3
Drama Desk Awards: Outstanding Director of a Musical for James Lapine,
Outstanding Book of a Musical for Rachel Sheinkin, and Outstanding
Ensemble Performance for the entire cast In addition to those, Dan
Fogler won Outstanding Featured Actor in a Musical at the Outer Critics
