Sierra Rep Receives A Grant From Save Mart CARES

Sierra Repertory Theatre recently received a $5,000 grant from Save Mart CARES to support presenting low-cost matinee performances especially for area students.

"We're thrilled that Save Mart CARES shares our values and mission of making art accessible to students," said Becky Saunders, the theater's managing director. "With so many schools having to make budgetary cuts aimed at arts programming it is now more important than ever to make sure that our kids are exposed to art whenever possible. For many students this grant will allow them to experience live professional theatre for the very first time."

Sierra Repertory Theatre is a non-profit, professional theater founded in 1980 by a group of University of the Pacific students. The theater draws an audience of about 45,000 each year to the East Sonora Theatre and the Historic Fallon House Theatre in Columbia State Historic Park.

SRT's popular student matinee program brings approximately 1,000 area students to the two theaters for main-stage performances at dramatically-discounted prices. Tickets are just $10. To enrich the experience SRT also provides teachers and parents with additional resources such as study guides, guest speakers, backstage tours and more.

Save Mart CARES funds will be used to help replenish the cost for bringing students to experience A Midsummer Night's Dream, in May, and will also be used to ensure that students will be able to attend Ken Ludwig's Baskerville: A Sherlock Holmes Mystery.

Money comes from the Save Mart CARES Foundation, which supports art, recreation, sports and education programs in the areas that stores serve.

Sierra Rep is always accepting donations to fund student matinees and other programs. For more information, contact Director of Theatre Development Margaret Lawrence or 209-532-0502, ext. 111, or go to www.SierraRep.org.
