The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), the nation's lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) media advocacy and anti-defamation organization, today joined advocates, allies and fair-minded Americans everywhere in celebrating the first day of marriage equality in New York State. GLAAD's staff is on the ground in New York City, helping couples share their stories with media and bringing positive messages about gay and lesbian couples at the heart of marriage equality to homes across the country.

"Today, our nation took a tremendous step forward in the movement toward full equality," said GLAAD's Acting President Mike Thompson. "Everyone should be able to marry the person they love, and as Americans hear stories of loving and committed couples like those we saw in New York today, more and more are supporting marriage equality.

"This historic step shows that marriage equality is an increasingly non-partisan issue," said Herndon Graddick, GLAAD's Senior Director of Programs. "Republicans and Democrats joined the majority of Americans who agree that equal protections under the law for loving and committed couples is the only option in a healthy and just society."

Throughout the campaign and in other states across the country, GLAAD has worked with partner organizations and coalitions including New Yorkers United for Marriage to connect media with newlyweds. GLAAD also works with couples and LGBT-affirming faith leaders and congregations to elevate their inclusive messages.
