Photos: HAPPY DAYS in Rehearsal at Bridge Street Theatre
William Bezek designs scenery and costumes, with lighting by John Sowle, for Beckett's classic.
Bridge Street Theatre will open Samuel Beckett's "Happy Days" this Thursday, September 3, with Roxanne Fay as Winnie and Bridge Street Theatre co-founder Steven Patterson as Willie. Matthew Earnest directs the production, which runs through September 13 at Bridge Street Theatre in Catskill, New York. Check out rehearsal photos below!
"Happy Days" finds Winnie embedded waist-deep in a mound beneath a blazing sun. Nearby, her husband Willie remains largely out of sight. Armed with a handbag full of familiar objects, an inexhaustible supply of words, and a determination to greet another day, Winnie carries on. As the play progresses and her circumstances become increasingly impossible, the rituals of ordinary life take on extraordinary weight.
Roxanne Fay takes on the role of Winnie. A longtime actor, director, playwright, and teaching artist, Fay has performed on stages throughout the country and was recently honored with a Berkshire Theatre Critics Association Award. Opposite her, Steven Patterson appears as Willie. Patterson is an actor, director, playwright, and co-founder of Bridge Street Theatre whose extensive performance career spans classical and contemporary work. Director Matthew Earnest helms the production.
The physical world of "Happy Days" is created by scenic and Costume Designer William Bezek, whose design places Winnie and Willie within a landscape at once theatrical and desolate. John Sowle provides lighting design, sculpting the play's relentless light and shifting visual world.
"Happy Days" premiered in 1961 and has become one of Samuel Beckett's most celebrated and enduring works. More than six decades later, Winnie's insistence on finding structure, pleasure, language, and even happiness amid circumstances she cannot control remains startlingly resonant.
