Off-Off Events Announced For Theatre 80 St Mark's, Theatre for the New City & More

There will be several productions and exhibits presented in New York City in September.

DOWNTOWN MUSIC PRODUCTIONS in Marc Blitzstein's THE CRADLE WILL ROCK

Howl Festival and the Actor's Fund present a repeat of Downtown Music Productions' staged reading of The Cradle Will Rock, (called by Marc Blitzstein "A Play in Music"), the historic work whose allegory of corruption and corporate greed is as timely today as when it was premiered in 1937. Cast of 16 actor/singers in staging by Larry Marshall, music direction and piano by Mimi Stern-Wolfe, founder/director of Downtown Music Productions, and choreography by Laura Stilwell.

Playwright Andrea J. Fulton has based her new play on a true family story. Set in
Louisiana in the 1800's, the story centers around Charley, a mulatto who chooses to "pass," a choice that questions his values and loyalties, as well as those of everyone he encounters.

Ralph Lee'S METTAWEE RIVER THEATRE COMPANY

Lee reprises his 1997 production The Woman Who Fell from the Sky, drawn from an Iroquois creation tale in which the Sky Woman falls from the spirit world and lands on the back of a turtle, heralding the beginning of life on land. Following the production's New York premiere, Lawrence Van Gelder wrote: "With simple beauty, gentle humor, beguiling music and considerable ingenuity, imagination, wisdom and charm, the eternal mystery of creation is being explored by the gifted puppet master, designer and director Ralph Lee." (The New York Times, September 15, 1998)

MIRO MAGLOIRE'S NEW CHAMBER BALLET

Magloire's 2010-11 season opens with a program of ballets by Magloire, including a premiere, and Emery Le Crone (her Five Songs, music by Mendelssohn, created for the Columbia Ballet Collaborative earlier this year). Alexandra Blacker, formerly with the Los Angeles Ballet, will make her debut with the Company.

Featured performers Sarah Stackhouse (former soloist with the Limon Dance Company), Kathryn Alter (currently Limon Company), Daniel Madoff and John Hinrichs (currently Merce Cunningham Dance Company) join the resident KHDT for Hirabayashi's Light is Calling, Haiku (solo for Sarah Stackhouse), Mishima, music by Philip Glass, and The Spring, set to Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring.

ANAHID SOFIAN'S Passage through Light and Shadows: The Children of Ararat

Theatre of St. Clements, 423 West 46th Street

Anahid Sofian honors her Armenian heritage with this major dance/drama that combines movement, the spoken word, and video projections. Performed by a company of 20 dancers and actors, joined by Ms. Sofian as "The Rememberer," the work will provide insight into Armenia's ancient and rich culture through its dance, music, poetry, art, architecture, religion, and folklore.
