National Theatre Live presents the international broadcast of Carrie Cracknell's acclaimed National Theatre production of Terence Rattigan's The Deep Blue Sea tonight, October 6, 2016.

Carrie Cracknell's acclaimed National Theatre production of Terence Rattigan's play

Broadcast to cinemas internationally tonight, October 6, 2016 (with many encore dates in U.S. cities)

A flat in Ladbroke Grove, West London. 1952. When Hester Collyer is found by her neighbors in the aftermath of a failed suicide attempt, the story of her tempestuous affair with Freddie Page, a former RAF pilot and the breakdown of her marriage to a High Court Judge begins to emerge. With it comes a portrait of need, loneliness and long-repressed passion. Behind the fragile veneer of post-war civility burns a brutal sense of loss and longing.

Helen McCrory plays Hester Collyer; the full cast is James Alper, Marion Bailey, Katy Brittain, Tom Burke (Freddie Page), Hubert Burton, Adetomiwa Edun, Elsie Fallon, Nick Figgis, Nick Fletcher, Yolanda Kettle, AnDrew Lewis, and Peter Sullivan. The creative team features designs by Tom Scutt, lighting by Guy Hoare, music by Stuart Earl, sound by Peter Rice and movement direction by Polly Bennett.

National Theatre Live launched in June 2009 with a broadcast of the National Theatre production of Phèdre with Helen Mirren. They have since broadcast almost fifty other productions live, from both the National Theatre and from other theatres in the UK. Their broadcasts have now been experienced by 6 million people in over 2,000 venues around the world, including over 660 venues in the UK alone. Past broadcasts from the National Theatre have included Danny Boyle's Frankenstein with Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller; War Horse; Man and Superman with Ralph Fiennes; and Everyman with Chiwetel Ejiofor. Broadcasts from other UK theatres include Coriolanus from the Donmar Warehouse; A View from the Bridge from the Young Vic; Macbeth from the Manchester International Festival; and Hangmen and The Audience from London's West End. NT Live's biggest single broadcast to date is Hamlet with Benedict Cumberbatch at the Barbican, which has now been seen by over 600,000 people.

Encores are now ongoing for some of National Theatre Live's most acclaimed recent productions. Encore dates and cinema locations are added frequently. Current and upcoming encores running in the US include:

· The Audience - See Helen Mirren and Richard McCabe in their Tony Award-winning roles in this re-broadcast of the original London production of The Audience recorded live at London's Gielgud Theatre.

· Frankenstein - Benedict Cumberbatch & Jonny Lee Miller both earned Olivier Awards for their celebrated performances alternating in the roles of Victor Frankenstein and the Creature. One of NT Live's most popular broadcasts ever, Frankenstein returns to cinemas in October due to audience demand.

· Hamlet - Benedict Cumberbatch took on the celebrated title role in Shakespeare's classic play in a sold out run at the Barbican Theatre last year. Audiences have one more chance to see Cumberbatch in this critically acclaimed production directed by Lyndsey Turner and produced by Sonia Friedman Productions this November.

· Hangmen - West End transfer of the new play by Olivier and Academy Award winner Martin McDonagh, recorded live at London's Wyndham's Theatre.

· Les Liaisons Dangereuses - The Donmar Warehouse production of Christopher Hampton's adaptation; starring Janet McTeer and Dominic West; directed by Josie Rourke.

· One Man, Two Guvnors - Host of "The Late Late Show" James Corden won a Tony Award for his performance in One Man, Two Guvnors. Now catch host of the 2016 Tony Awards in his critically acclaimed performance, which was captured at the National Theatre during its original London run.

· A View from the Bridge - Mark Strong won an Olivier Award for creating the role of Eddie Carbone in Tony-winning director Ivo van Hove's innovative new Tony Award-winning production from the Young Vic in London.

· War Horse - The National Theatre's multi-award-winning production, seen by 5 million people worldwide since its premiere at the National Theatre in 2007, recorded live at the New London Theatre returns to cinemas in December.
