It is undeniable that Glee is a certified hit.  A multi-media mega-hit, in fact, as the show continues to top not only broadcast charts, but the iTunes charts, as well.  The question on many minds, however, in anticipation of the final numbers tabulating the success of the first Glee album release out on Wednesday, is just how much fans want of the singing troupe.

Glee, the genre-defying new musical comedy series, follows an optimistic teacher who against all odds and a malicious cheerleading coach attempts to save McKinley High's Glee Club from obscurity while helping a group of aspiring underdogs realize their true star potential. Singles from the show, including renditions of some international classics such as Journey's Don't Stop Believin' and Neil Diamond's Sweet Caroline, have sold over a cumulative 1.8 million worth in downloads. With such high sales in track purchases, industry speculators have have been on the fence as to how the compilation disk, Glee: The Music, Vol. 1, a collection of 17 songs featured on the TV show, will fare.

The disk was released by Columbia Records last week on November 3.  The weekly results will be released on Wednesday.  It's success may not only be an indicator of fan's saturation point for the T.V. show -- it very well may also be litmus test verifying music-buying trends.  It is no revelation that CD sales have been struggling since iTunes mania ensued a couple of years ago.  One would think that the album would top the charts given the abundance of Glee enthusiasm. Yet, with such successful over-saturation to date, in which all of the tunes were heard prior to the album's release and many of which were available via download, the success of the CD sale - or lack thereof - could be an indicator that going download is officially the best and only way to go.

The Hits Daily Double website's predictions seem to indicate that CDs are not quite yet a thing of the past, based on first day sales of the Glee disk. They predict that the album will sell between 100K-125K copies and land either second or third on the Billboard chart, behind Carrie Underwood's album. It is likely, as well, that the final numbers for the Glee CD may be on the lower side due to it's recent two week hiatus on Fox due to the World Series broadcast.
