EDINBURGH 2026: Review: FOR DOLORES, Traverse Theatre Image

For Dolores is a new play presented by Fishamble in association with Lime Tree Theatre, Belltable, Galway International Arts Festival and the Traverse Theatre. It is written by Eva O’Connor, directed by Jim Culleton.

For Dolores isn’t a linear play. We open with the present: Mo (Catriona Faint) and Réaltín (Lara McDonnell) are living together as friends in a one-bedroom flat with Réaltín’s one-year-old daughter, Dolores. The pair met seven years ago when they were studying in Edinburgh and had an unfortunate incident in a broken-down lift. The narrative shifts between now and then, taking us through the events that led us to what feels like a couples counselling session.

The chemistry between Faint and McDonnell is off the charts and makes this relationship really touching to watch. Mo and Réaltín know the absolute best and worst of each other and rib each other in the way that only real friends can.

When Réaltín accepts the proposal of a Finnish man (never named, just referred to by his nationality) it’s clear that Mo doesn’t approve, and it creates a distance between the pair. When tragedy strikes, it takes a while for the two to find each other again, and Réaltín appears with a small child in tow.

For Dolores is wildly unpredictable and completely gripping. These two performers are utterly captivating, and you can’t help but get swept up in their story. Réaltín is a middle-class Irish girl, and Mo is pure Glaswegian radge, but both are deeply lovable.

O’Connor’s writing is simultaneously gut-wrenching and life-affirming, making this quite the 80-minute rollercoaster of emotions. Uplifted by two extraordinary performances, For Dolores is a remarkable piece of theatre.
