On Monday, June 27, 2011, New York Theatre Barn will present its monthly platform, now in its 4th year, for emerging musical theatre writers at the D-Lounge (at the Daryl Roth Theater). Featured writers for the June 27 installment include Daniel S. Acquisto (Like You Like It), Sammy Buck (Like You Like It), Brandon Gwinn (Fringe NY's Underwear: A Space Musical), and Eric H. Weinberger (Class Mothers '68, Wanda's World). Executive Producers for NYTB in the D-Lounge are Laura Brandel and Karen Marshall.
The first set of the evening will feature selections from the new musical ...And Then I Wrote A Song About It, with Book by
Eric H. Weinberger, Music by Daniel S. Acquisto, and Lyrics by
Sammy Buck. The presentation stars the incomparable
Nick Cearley (All Shook Up) who reprises his one man role after starring in recent productions at New Jersey's
Luna Stage and San Diego's Diversionary Theatre. The New York Timeshails Cearley as "Vivacious. A bright-eyed ingenuous face and inexhaustible energy."
Igor Goldin (With Glee, Like You Like It) reprises his role as Director, as does Musical Director
Thomas Hodges. Come see an excerpt from the musical the Newark Star-Ledger calls "Extraordinarily smart! Full of melody, bounce and joy!" Set to the rhythm of the disco era and beyond, this earnest yet uproarious musical breaks new ground with its tour-de-force cast of one: the Star-Ledger's pick for Best Actor in a Musical,
Nick Cearley as Randall Klausner, a perspiring actor-singer-songwriter-dancer-secretary searching for love and fame in the early 1980s. "Directed to perfection by
Igor Goldin. Thoroughly marvelous. Not atall your typical ‘one man show,' [it] is a full-fledged one-act book musical that just happens to have a single performer playing not only itsprotagonist but assorted characters in his orbit, making for a funny, tuneful, emotion-packed, nostalgic look back at the last days of disco."-Stage Scene LA
The second set, An Evening With Brandon James Gwinn, will feature Music and Lyrics by Brandon James Gwinn who is a New York City based writer hailing from Nashville, TN. Brandon's score for Underwear: A Space Musical premiered in the 2008 New York International Fringe Festival to rave reviews. He is also the composer for the musicals Hatter, The Happy Prince, and Speargrove Presents. His music and words can also be heard in the NYC nightlife scene as part of
Cait Doyle's Hot Mess in Manhattan,
Amy Lynn and the Gun Show, Divas Anonymous and My Big Thick Schtick. His work is a favorite of the New York Theatre Barn who presented his sold out concert debut (Brandon James Gwinn: in briefwhich is highly You Tube-able). Brandon is a graduate of New York University's Musical Theatre Writing Program. Brandon and a slew of other performers (yet to be announced) will perform his original songs.
