From the use of small case letters for her name to her music, k.d. lang has never fit the mold...any mold. Throughout her career, lang has touched on just about every form of music, on May 4th, spend An Evening With k.d. lang as she brings her unique musical world to the historic St. George.

Lang was first drawn to country music when she attended college. Soon, she became fascinated with the life and music of Patsy Cline and ultimately formed a Patsy Cline tribute band called the Reclines in 1983, and they recorded a debut album, Friday Dance Promenade. A follow-up album, A Truly Western Experience, was released in 1984 and received strong reviews, which led to national attention in Canada. The buzz lang was generating north of the border caught the attention of U.S. labels and she released Angel with a Lariat the next year.

Her career received a huge boost when rock legend, Roy Orbison chose her to record a duet of his standard, "Crying". Instead of being overwhelmed by the power of Orbison's three octave voice, the two blended their tremendous vocal ranges into a riveting collaboration. Her next release, 1988's Shadowland was an even greater success. This album was followed by Absolute Torch and Twang, which earned lang a Grammy award in 1989. Although lang initially made her name in country music. She caused considerable controversy within the traditional world of country music. Few knew what to make of her or her music, but no one questioned her considerable vocal talents. Not content to make waves only in her career choices, lang sparked controversy with her personal life too. Her boldness was put to the test just before the release of her next album, Ingenue, when she came out of the closet in a magazine interview.

With the 1992 release of Ingenue, k.d. lang surpassed all her previous achievements, and marked a significant turn in her career. Ingenue wasn't country at all it was adult-oriented pop, exposing lang to a new, wider audience. The album's single, "Constant Craving," was a top 40 hit. That year, k.d. lang picked up her second Grammy, this time for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.

Special guest, Sire Records recording artist, Meaghan Smith has been added to the k.d. lang tour. Smith is on the road in support of her EP CD/DVD, The Cricket's Quartet released in late 2008. This charming newcomer from Halifax, Nova Scotia is the child of a piano-teacher mother and a bass-playing father. Smith devoured old musicals and animated films as a child, and later fell in love with the jazz and big-band music of the '20s, '30s, and '40s. Those early inspirations influenced the timeless quality of the music on The Cricket's Quartet.
