Guillotine Theatre to Premiere Bacchae-Inspired Comedy THE NASTY WOMEN at Capital Fringe

Guillotine Theatre presents a world premiere of Lisa Alapick's THE NASTY WOMEN of the Ecstatic Rainbow Mystical Retreat as part of the Capital Fringe Festival.

A new comedy inspired by The Bacchae, NASTY WOMEN re-imagines the central argument of Euripides' play in light of current political events.

THE NASTY WOMEN of the Ecstatic Rainbow Mystical Retreat is presented by Guillotine Theatre, directed by ShAri Lewis, and features Danny Rovin, Marketa S. Nicholson, Mariel Penberthy, Tony Greenberg, Robert Heinly, Lisa Hill-Corley, and Catherine Aselford.

The Bacchae recounts the story of a controlling King who does not acknowledge or respect the instinctual, sensual side of human nature. Dionysus, a 'new God from the East' arrives, bringing a cohort of 'unruly women' who destroy the King and overthrow the ruling party.

In Lisa Alapick's adaptation, THE NASTY WOMEN draws parallels between the world of Euripides' play and America today. When better to present a play about repressing the sensual, suppressing women, rejecting foreigners, and toppling a tyrannical regime? Well, ok maybe 405 BC was also a good time.

This production is presented as a part of the 2017 Capital Fringe Festival, a program of the Washington, DC non-profit Capital Fringe.
