Ryan Wilson Receives 2013 Pauline McGibbon Award

Scenic carpenter Ryan Wilson is the 2013 recipient of the Pauline McGibbon Award. The award presentation will take place at the Dora Mavor Moore Awards news conference at Toronto's Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts.

Ryan Wilson is a passionate artist whose talent, collaborative spirit and work ethic have earned him praise from his peers. He is currently the head scenic carpenter at Young People's Theatre (Toronto), and he has worked at numerous theatre companies, including Soulpepper Theatre Company (Toronto), fu-GEN Asian Canadian Theatre Company (Toronto), Factory Theatre (Toronto) and Globe Theatre (Regina, Sask.).

As a freelance production manager/technical director at fu-GEN Asian Canadian Theatre Company, Wilson worked on four productions:Ching Chong Chinaman (2013), Brown Balls (2011), lady in the red dress (2009) and Banana Boys (2008).

Ryan Wilson graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Ryerson University's Theatre School in 2007.

The 2013 jury felt that Ryan Wilson is "an excellent embodiment of the spirit of the Pauline McGibbon Award. He is a theatre craftsperson and an artist." They also noted that "Ryan exudes passion for his work in theatre. His dedication to any project and his careful consideration of all aspects of the design make a strong contribution to a fully realized artistic vision. Ryan's work is integral to the process."

About the Pauline McGibbon Award: Established in 1981, the award honours former Lieutenant Governor Pauline McGibbon for her support and patronage of the arts. The award is given each year by the Province of Ontario through the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport and includes a $7,000 prize and amedal designed by Dora de Pédery-Hunt. The award is presented to a member of Ontario's professional theatre community in the Early Stages of his or her career who has displayed a unique talent and a potential for excellence.

The award is cyclical in nature and recognizes the unique talents of artists who have contributed to the well-being of Ontario's theatre community. The first year of the three-year cycle, the award goes to a designer, the second year to a director and the third year to a production craftsperson.
