A verbally abusive parent, a therapist trying to help, and friends who just don't seem to understand. Andrew is torn between his potential and his past. This musical deals with the every day struggles of mental health, specifically depression and anxiety. As well as the all-too-common, and mostly unspoken topic of verbal abuse, which many people suffer from.
A new musical with book and lyrics by Aubrey Rothman, and music by Stacy Collins. The writing for 'Becoming Me' was first started six years ago, being loosely based off of Aubrey Rothman's own personal experience and struggle with mental health and verbal abuse. Later on it culminated into his fourth year Thesis project at Ryerson University, and after further additions and edits flourished into this Fringe production. Both verbal abuse and mental health are widely taboo topics. While at one level, it is such a personal story of one young man and his father, it speaks volumes to many other similar stories. 'Becoming Me' is a brave new work of drama with music, extremely personal, yet widely universal.
The musical showcases the wonderful talent of six amazing performers. Including graduates from Sheridan College, Randolph Academy, Queens University and performers in past Companies such as Lower Ossington and Scarborough Music Theatre. Both Stacy Collins and Aubrey Rothman are at the helm of the crew, as the directorial team, and are rounded out beautifully with both Ryerson alumni and students within the Performance Production program.
Something in the Six Theatre Company is a new company, showcasing a refreshingly relatable look at Mental Illness and other heavily prevalent themes.
