Based on The Birds by Aristophanes

Emily was an aviatrix who fearlessly walked on the wings of the family biplane. Just as she once plummeted dizzyingly through space, she is now falling through inner space as the result of a stroke. This extraordinary musical takes us inside Emily’s mind as she finds the light at the end of the tunnel in the cave of her memory. With breathtaking simplicity, WINGS charts her recovery as she regains her spirit to achieve new heights. Starring Ann Crumb. Directed by Jesse Cline.

Septime Webre's choreography, Liz Vandal's concept and costume design, James Kronzer's scenic design and Clifton Taylor's lighting design recreate Carroll's surreal world with those wonders of wonders completely intact. A ballet conceived for The Washington Ballet in 2012, Artistic Director Michael Pink imported the lush, full length ballet for his brilliant company, the Ballet Program II and students of the Milwaukee Ballet School and Academy. Zimmerli Art Museum to Display Woodcut Prints from Helen Hyde, Bertha Lum
by BWW News Desk - May 2, 2016

New Brunswick, NJ – The historic re-establishment of trade between Japan and Western nations in 1853 also greatly influenced art and culture throughout the second half of the 19th century. Exhibitions at museums and world's fairs introduced Asian artists and traditions in North America and Europe, where artists enthusiastically embraced subjects, compositions, and materials they rarely – if ever – had seen before. The Zimmerli Art Museum's new exhibition “Infinite Opportunities Offered in Color”:  Prints by Helen Hyde and Bertha Lum, on view through July 31, features 35 works by two American artists who, in turn, disseminated these artistic developments to audiences back home. Both artists spent considerable time living abroad in Asia and recognized the unique artistic possibilities for representing traditional aspects of life in an area of the world that was rapidly modernizing. They mastered complex color printing techniques and depicted aspects of Japanese and Chinese culture that essentially had been absent in the West. Because these artists generally are presented in survey exhibitions, this is a rare opportunity to view a significant group of works by either artist.“Infinite Opportunities Offered in Color” also complements other works on view from the Zimmerli's permanent collection, including examples of the Japonisme movement and a gallery that commemorates Rutgers' historic relationship with Japan.   (more...)

BWW Opera Review: Vertical Player Repertory Disinters Pacini's MALVINA DI SCOZIA
by Richard Sasanow - May 16, 2016

As part of the New York Opera Fest, Brooklyn's scrappy Vertical Player Repertory ventured into Manhattan's Christ and St. Stephen's Church near Lincoln Center, bringing with it a true rarity: Giovanni Pacini's bel canto-ish MALVINA DI SCOZIA, which dates from 1851. And while it was good to hear a work that competed in its day with the operas of Bellini, Rossini and Donizetti (not to mention the up-and-coming Verdi), “rarity” isn't necessarily synonymous with “ready for prime time,” even in Vertical's spirited production.
