by BWW News Desk - Jan 19, 2016

American Conservatory Theater's Master of Fine Arts Program, Class of 2016, will present Dan LeFranc's The Big Meal-a delicious comedy about eight diners, four generations and one family-February 24-27, 2016 in The Rueff at A.C.T.'s Strand Theater (1127 Market Street, San Francisco). Family is not a word, it's a seating chart in this delicious and provocative comedy. Playwright Dan LeFranc orients the drama around four generations of a single family loving and laughing, fighting and yelling over a series of meals. While the passing of time in LeFranc's world is fluid (this feels like a modern cousin of Thornton Wilder's The Long Christmas Dinner), the meals are quick and casual-a moveable feast. One moment, two young lovers are hooking up over cocktails, the next moment, they're middle-aged and clashing about their kids. With characters that develop, flip, and shift, The Big Meal serves up a thought-provoking feast for audiences. (more...)

What do you give the person who has everything? For Irving Berlin, the answer was a song. Perhaps Felder had the same audience in mind when he wrote his one-man show, "Irving Berlin." Just under two hours long with no intermission, the robust production is an incomparable gift in itself. BWW Review: Theatre Works' BYHALIA, MS Plays 'the Race Card' - But There Are Others Up Its SleeveBWW Review: Theatre Works' BYHALIA, MS Plays 'the Race Card' - But There Are Others Up Its Sleeve
by Joseph Baker - Jan 11, 2016

Evan Linder's BYHALIA, MS, a winner of the 2014 NewWorks@The Works Playwriting Competition, came about at an interesting time. I had recently heard an interview on NPR featuring Alabama-born Walton Goggins, currently co-starring in Quintin Tarantino's THE HATEFUL EIGHT. Goggins, a gifted actor, made the point that he did not wish to perpetuate the tired old 'let's paint Southerners as uneducated rednecks' point of view that all too often emerges in Hollywood films about the subject; having appreciated his point, I was initially wary of a work about racism entitled BYHALIA, MS. The South, and Mississippi in particular, are easy 'punching bags' for liberals; and yes, the historical past can surely produce numerous examples. There's no way, I thought, that Evan Linder should ever run for Mayor of Byhalia, a small Mississippi town not far from Memphis. However, after seeing the play, I realized that I was guilty of preconceived notions and misconceptions -- a shortcoming shared by black and white characters alike in Mr. Linder's probing, ambitious work. BWW Review: DEADPOOL Shakes Up Superhero Genre with Profane PerfectionBWW Review: DEADPOOL Shakes Up Superhero Genre with Profane Perfection
by Matt Tamanini - Feb 8, 2016

When looking at the history of film, distinct well-worn patterns develop over time; tendencies turn into tropes and conventions become clichés. This has never been truer than in today's Hollywood as reboots and franchises have dominated the calendar for the last two decades, drowning out originality and creativity. However, once every generation or two, a film so exceeds the limitations that an assigned genre has placed on it that it is destined to change the way that we look at cinema forever; THE JAZZ SINGER, CITIZEN KANE, SINGIN' IN THE RAIN, THE GODFATHER, PULP FICTION, and now DEADPOOL.
