CABARET LIFE NYC: Reaction to the Recent Rita Wilson and Molly Ringwald Cafe Carlyle Shows Reveal Much About How We View Singing CelebritiesCABARET LIFE NYC: Reaction to the Recent Rita Wilson and Molly Ringwald Cafe Carlyle Shows Reveal Much About How We View Singing Celebrities
by Stephen Hanks - Oct 27, 2014

Rita Wilson and Molly Ringwald deserve a lot of credit for being gutsy enough to go out of their comfort zones as performers and venture into the intimate, sometimes scary art from known as cabaret, where you're always live and can't rely on extra takes. It's also obvious that they've worked very hard at becoming the best vocalists they can possibly be. They have just as much right to live out their cabaret performing fantasies as, oh, about 75 percent of the 'singers' booking shows in cabaret room all over the New York. If Wilson and Ringwald weren't bold-faced names would their singing really be considered good enough to merit them gigs (and extended ones at that) at the Cafe Carlyle? And if they weren't celebrities, would they be receiving such breathlessly positive reviews from critics, some of who should know better? (more...)

Five weeks later, on December 19, 2013, Town Hall will overflow with the musical joys of the season when three extraordinary talents, Leslie Uggams, Marilyn Maye and Christine Andreas take the stage for Holiday Belles. by Don Grigware - May 20, 2014

It's always nice to revisit a show and see a 100% improvement. Such is the case with the rewritten spoof A Big Gay North Hollywood Wedding at Crown City Theatre, which opened May 15 for an extended run, at least throughout the summer. The first time around - 2009 - (review below) I noticed a lot of missed opportunities for big laughs. With an exceedingly strong cast and a really sturdy ending which puts the whole issue of being gay centerstage in a totally positive way, this new version hits the top. (more...)

BWW Reviews: MY MOTHER'S KEEPER Shares Memories of Four Generations of Women in a Show Business FamilyBWW Reviews: MY MOTHER'S KEEPER Shares Memories of Four Generations of Women in a Show Business Family
by Shari Barrett - May 10, 2013

MY MOTHER'S KEEPER, written by Jane Press and directed by Robin McKee, is a highly autobiographical memory play that moves fluidly back and forth between 1914 when an event involving Press' great-grandmother sets off a cycle of damage and dysfunction, and the present. While the humor of this play may be Jewish, the experience of being part of a big, crazy family is universal. (more...)

BWW Reviews: CHICAGO at the Arundel Barn Playhouse is 'All That Jazz'BWW Reviews: CHICAGO at the Arundel Barn Playhouse is 'All That Jazz'
by Scott Moreau - Jul 5, 2013

"They'll love you a lot more if you hang. You know why? Because they'll sell more papers". When Bob Fosse, John Kander and Fred Ebb presented their jazz-aged masterpiece for the first time in 1975, I doubt they could foresee millions of people tuning in for highlights on the George Zimmerman trial on every major network. Nor could Maurine Dallas Watkins have any way of knowing that her play (CHICAGO is based on it) would be so topical for years to come, after writing it in 1926. But, nearly 90 years later, with trials on every channel and our justice system often in upheaval, it seems to be more relevant than ever. And the Arundel Barn Playhouse's production of CHICAGO proves just why it has endured. (more...)

East Lynne Theater Company Presents WHY MARRY?, 5/10East Lynne Theater Company Presents WHY MARRY?, 5/10
by BWW News Desk - Apr 17, 2013

'I can't marry Ernest Hamilton. I love him! We wish to be free to keep together! In the old days when they had interests in common, marriage used to make man and woman one, but now, it puts them apart. Can't you see it all about you? No wonder one in eleven ends in divorce. The only way to avoid spiritual separation is to shun legal union like a disease. Modern marriage is divorce.' Helen is talking to her much befuddled family in Jesse Lynch Williams' comedy 'Why Marry?,' the first play to receive a Pulitzer Prize. A Broadway hit in 1917, it toured the country for a year, but had not been produced again until East Lynne Theater Company included it in its 2006 Cape May production season. The show was so successful, that ELTC revived it the following summer. On Friday, May 10 at 7:30p.m., 'Why Marry?' returns to a NYC stage for the first time since 1917 when ELTC presents a staged reading with most of the actors who were in the acclaimed 2007 production, at The Players Club, located at 16 Gramercy Park South (20th Street, East of Park Avenue).
