BWW Review: INTO THE WOODS at Candlelight Dinner Playhouse
by Felicia Tassone - Jun 7, 2016

Sondheim.  A name which can instill both fear and awe in the mind of any actor.  Of the three shows with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by James Lapine, Into the Woods has always been the most popular with theatres across the country, and also the most problematic. Many people would say the problem with the show is that it has a punchy first half, followed by a preachy second.  This is a problem with Candlelight Dinner Playhouse's current production of Into the Woods, running now through July 10th.  (more...)

BWW Review: INTO THE WOODS, Menier Chocolate Factory, 12 July 2016
by Marianka Swain - Jul 13, 2016

Anyone who ever played 'shop' as a child, trading real or imaginary objects over a table, will experience a thrill of recognition at Fiasco Theater's stripped-back take on Sondheim and James Lapine's ode to and deconstruction of storytelling. That's what we get for the swiftly evoked bakery, and there's a dressmaker's dummy standing in for a tree, a feather duster and Christmas tree ornament for a golden egg-laying hen, a ladder for a mighty tower, a wooden crate for a throne, shadow play during the action sequences, and flapping pieces of paper as the ever-helpful birds. BWW Review: Sweet BIG FISH at Taproot Lacks Power
by Jay Irwin - Jul 11, 2016

Back in 2013 Andrew Lippa sent his latest work off to Broadway. "Big Fish", based on the movie of the same name, was sure to be a big hit. But for some reason this sweet little tuner failed to catch fire and closed in just under 4 months. Sadly with such a tepid reception no tour of the show was ever planned so the only way anyone would see this lovely show would be a regional production. Fortunately we currently have one of those for "Big Fish" at Taproot Theatre. Unfortunately, while there's plenty of talent in the show, one of the leads wasn't quite up to the task vocally and for a big, ballad laden musical that can be deadly. (more...)
