BWW Reviews: VANYA AND SONIA AND MASHA AND SPIKE Check Off a HitBWW Reviews: VANYA AND SONIA AND MASHA AND SPIKE Check Off a Hit
by Elizabeth Peterson-Vita - Sep 17, 2014

Acclaimed American playwright Christopher Durang is well known for his absurd and often outrageous humor, and his VANYA AND SONIA AND MASHA AND SPIKE, winner of a Tony Award in 2013 for Best Play, is no exception. An engaging farce with a somewhat surprising degree of sentiment at its core, this darkish comedy sends up the classic work of Anton Chekhov while also countering it with a kind of cock-eyed optimism. This Trustus Theatre's production, in the capable hands of director Jim O'Connor and well-modulated cast, just completed its first week's run and happily will be playing for another two weeks. There are plenty of in-jokes for theatre majors and the cognoscenti, but the uninitiated can also enjoy the modern comedy and unexpected charm that infuses Durang's take on a very idiosyncratic family whose caricatured members are yet familiar to us. BWW Review: WHAT MAKES A MAN at the Berkley Street TheatreBWW Review: WHAT MAKES A MAN at the Berkley Street Theatre
by Dennis Kucherawy - Oct 22, 2014

While reviewing What Makes a Man (WMAM), now playing at the Berkley Street Theatre, it's tempting to comment on what's not there, what could and should be there, rather than what is there. What is on display is a marvelous musical stage portrait of Charles Aznavour, the world renowned French singer/songwriter, actor and political activist/diplomat. A man of the world, he is capable of singing in five languages. One of the last surviving 'showmen,' he still is capable of filling the world's most prestigious concert halls. For example, a year ago he performed for the first time in 25 years at London's Royal Albert Hall. Demand was so great, a second concert was booked there for this past June. (more...)

by Kara McCoy - Oct 15, 2014

Last week the island saw its first real blindside of the season, as John Bad-mouth Rocker was sent packing. Not too shabby for only the third episode. Now, I'm about to embarrass myself by revealing how seriously I take my reality shows, but we're all friends here, so here goes. It's very refreshing to see actual moves being made this early in the game--those aptly named 'power moves.' If you watch BIG BROTHER, another CBS reality stalwart, you know how long it can take before a contestant makes any attempt to shake up the game. In fact, it could never happen at all. BIG BROTHER is famous for its unanimous evictions, as week after week the house, the BB equivalent to a tribe, votes together according to the Head of Household's wishes. Predictable. Uninteresting. And believe me, as boring to watch as it is to write about. So thank you, Coyopa. You're keeping me on my toes. (more...)

Dr. Angela Chester New Book Exposes the Emotion of Breast Cancer, Stories of Survivorship IncreaseDr. Angela Chester New Book Exposes the Emotion of Breast Cancer, Stories of Survivorship Increase
by BWW News Desk - Oct 13, 2013

Dr. Angela Chester: ' As a fellow breast cancer survivor, I created 'My Life In Pink' (published by Lulu) to share these moving stories with as many women as possible. Ten spirited, brave and courageous women shared their time, their feelings, and their souls to tell their inspiring stories.' 'My Life in Pink' shares The Survivor stories of numerous women from various backgrounds and walks of life. Each woman shares her unique and encouraging story writing in her style. Every story brings about a different emotion, a different experience and a different attitude towards the fight for their lives. Reassuring. Empowering. Uplifting. An excerpt from page 48, 'My Life In Pink': 'Suddenly my life was turned upside down. At the age of 44 I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I shared the angst of over 2.4 million women in the U.S. ... Why was this happening to me? What was I going to do? Who would care for my five children?' Why this book? No matter the age of the reader, those diagnosed with breast cancer will find reassurance by relating to others who have found their way through the maze of surviving cancer. An excerpt from page 108, 'My Life In Pink': 'Let us raise our glasses to every warrior in pink who has fought before us and won, and to those who did not. To every warrior in pink who is fighting right now this very moment. And to the hope and the dream and their reality of seeing the day when the color pink can go back to being just a color.' According to the Oxford Dictionary, faith means having complete trust or confidence in someone or something, a strong belief in God or in a doctrine of a religion, based on spiritual apprehension rather than proof. In GOD ONLY KNOWS, Hugh Whitemore presents his audience with a factual, intelligent and intense debate over the validity and origins of faith, especially Christianity. It also explores humankind's need to believe in or have faith is something greater than ourselves. (more...)

Alright, folks. Let's just cut right to the chase. Tonight's The Survivor finale, and as I look back on the last 12 episodes, I feel more underwhelmed than nostalgic. I'm not saying the nothing happened this season, but...it kind of feels that way, doesn't it? A little bit? Usually I approach the finale with some sense of the contestant I'd like to win, or at least of the one I definitely don't. This year...I don't really care. And it's not because each of the remaining survivors deserves it; it's because they've all played this game at the same level of eh-ness. Should Baylor win? Eh. How about Missy? Eh. Jaclyn? Ehhhhh. Tony Asks WHO AM I? in New BookTony Asks WHO AM I? in New Book
by BWW News Desk - Aug 9, 2013

'Purpose! What is it?', author Tony asks his readers at the very beginning of his book Who Am I? Readers, reflexively, will have answers to this question. How Tony resolves it from its most complicated development in the world we know is an awesome display of bravura philosophical discourse. Purpose, as Tony has felt and carried it, has been driven in many opposing directions by the many forces let loose by belief or dogma, by political movement and religion-in his journey, it has been a painful time inside what he calls the 'vortex,' a confused state he likens to being Richard Condon's 'Manchurian Candidate.'
