John Cage, an American composer, music theorist, writer, philosopher, and artist, was interested in finding and collecting ordinary sounds to use; he wanted to capture and control them to use them as musical instruments. His pieces included normal objects as the instruments, something previously rejected in terms of art and in terms of sound. Most of the people who are interested in sound, then and now, would use the things he recorded in the field as sound effects: a car driving at 50 miles per hour, rain, or the static between radio stations. But instead, he used them to create music. A Chicago critic wrote about one of his concerts and the musicians' use of "beer bottles, flowerpots, cowbells, and automobile brake drums" to create a musical piece some might call noise, but one that John Cage called music. My first trip to New York was in January, and dare I say it, I fell in love. I fell in love with the New York lifestyle, with the city that is alive, with The New Yorkers and the Tourists, with Broadway. I had the pleasure of seeing 4 Broadway shows and an Opera at the Met in the 5 days that I was there (including travel days).  I got to tour the New Amsterdam Theater  (aka the theater that shows Disney Musicals) and try on some of the costumes, which was such an insane and incredible experience: check that off my bucket list. Aman Mojadidi's ONCE UPON A PLACE Brings Phone Booths and Immigrant Histories to Times Square

Times Square Arts and artist Aman Mojadidi bring Once Upon a Place, an interactive public art installation that creates a platform for immigrant voices, to Duffy Square (46th Street and 7th Avenue) from June 27- September 5. Visitors will be invited to open the door of one of three repurposed telephone booths, pick up the receiver, and listen to oral histories of immigration from the newest New Yorkers. Visitors can also open the phone book inside each booth to read more about the storytellers' communities both here in New York and the countries they have traveled from, and to leave behind a part of their own story if they wish. The installation will include 70 different stories that will last anywhere between 2 and 15 minutes.  There will be a press opening ceremony on Tuesday, June 27th at 11:00 am after which the installation will be open to the public.   (more...)

New York City Children's Theater Partners with NYC Schools for After-School Reading Program

Recently, Schools Chancellor Carmen Fariña visited the Flushing Family Residence to announce the Afterschool Reading Club, a brand-new literacy enrichment pilot for elementary school students living in shelters. This is the DOE's first citywide literacy-focused after school effort in shelters, and the pilot reflects the Administration's dedication to supporting the needs of students in temporary housing, and its commitment across all NYC's public schools to strengthening early literacy instruction and engaging parents as partners in students' education.
