'The Yellow Star' by Aaron Seth, is Released
by BWW News Desk - Nov 30, 2016

Aaron Seth writes about historical events for a young audience 10+. He feels that communicating to children of his own age will help them relate to historical world incidences in an objective manner while, they both learn and grow together. 'Your inspiring meditation on the power of kindness and hope over cruelty and despair is gracefully written and affecting. You evoke both your subject matter and narrator effectively and sensitively. It addresses serious and disturbing material in a way that is honest and unflinching but not overly explicit. 'I could see this story potentially being used as a teaching tool in support of related historical or religious material (e.g., a high school course examining the Holocaust or a discussion about Passover).' Editorial Review 'The central metaphor neatly turns the yellow star, a badge of shame, into a symbol of light and determination.' Kirkus Reviews Aaron Seth is fascinated with history. He became inspired by his grandfather, who was in hiding during the Holocaust. Although, he barely knew him, this book is dedicated in his honor as an Israeli Soldier who completed 21 military jumps out of a C-47 combat airplane. BWW Review: The Rep's FOREIGNER Resounds with Contagious Laughter and Contemporary Relevance
by Peggy Sue Dunigan - Nov 25, 2016

Written 30 plus years ago in 1985, the late Milwaukee playwright Larry Shue's award winning Foreigner first debuted at the Milwaukee Repertory Theater. After playing Broadway in the 80's, and reprised by numerous theaters across the country on an annual basis, Foreigner returns to the Quadracci Powerhous for the holiday season. Directed by the inimitable Laura Gordon who understands Shue's incomparable blend of humor, relevance and warm heartedness, could re-envision this scenario in a rural Georgia bed and breakfast inn. At the Georgia inn, a British Sergeant, Froggy, rescues his low spirited and shy friend Charlie for a weekend's stay Here Charlie meets the winsome inn owner, Betty, a conspiring reverend, David Marshall Lee, his fiance Catherine, her younger brother, Ellard, and a rapscallion homegrown Georgian, Owen. Throw in Catherine and Ellard's recent inheritance, and the invisible white empire on a starry night, and Shue created a hilarious farce, even when seen several times. (more...)

BWW Review: Love PRELUDE TO A KISS at 2nd Story Theatre
by Larry O'Brien - Nov 25, 2016

With PRELUDE TO A KISS, the current offering at 2nd Story Theatre in Warren, RI, playwright Craig Lucas came up with a realistically magical take on the Hollywood formula, boy-meets-girl, boy-loses-girl, boy-gets-girl back. Apparently this theme predates even Hollywood: on the way home from the theater I listened to Monteverdi's seventeenth century opera, L'Orfeo, based on the even older story of Orpheus, in which boy-meets-girl, boy-loses-girl, but oops. In this PRELUDE TO A KISS, which 2nd Story bills as a modern day fairy tale, elderly 'wedding crasher' (F. William Oakes) kisses the bride, Rita, (Lara Hakeem) and their souls exchange, which turns a perfect wedding into a white-knuckled flight of doubt and regret. All this leaves the brave but bewildered groom, Peter, (David Sackel) to reverse the curse armed only with the power of love and, eventually, the assistance of the persona-switched bride and crasher. Got all that? (more...)
