by Jenny Antill - May 2, 2015

It only lasted for four months on Broadway and has had just a few short stints elsewhere. Based on Louisa May Alcott's semi-autobiographical novel, it is a very character driven piece adapted for the stage by Allan Knee with music and lyrics by Jason Howland and Mindi Dickstein respectively. BOA Musical Theatre have yet again recreated a wonderful production. (more...)

BWW Reviews: Antaeus Offers Sumptuous and Scintillating PICNICBWW Reviews: Antaeus Offers Sumptuous and Scintillating PICNIC
by Don Grigware - Jun 28, 2015

William Inge's Pulitzer-Prize-winning Picnic depicting a small Kansas town in 1952, its strict code of morality and the inner longings of its people to break away, is perhaps his finest. Now in a stunning production at Antaeus directed ever so lovingly by Cameron Watson and boasting a superlative ensemble - actually three alternating casts: 'Deviled Eggs', 'Stuffed Peppers' and 'Pork Chops', Picnic still holds up some 60 years later, proving the omnipotence of human fragility. My visit was with the 'Deviled Eggs'cast. The music, the clothes, the hairstyles, and the cars are distinctly 50s, but goals, motivations and emotions remain the same. For those unfamiliar with the play or the uber popular 1956 film Picnic starring William Holden and Kim Novak, let's recap the plot briefly. (more...)

THE MUSIC MAN with Book. Music and Lyrics by Meredith Willson continues to be one of the most-loved American musicals of all time, regularly performed on stages across the country. Most musical theater ends with a simple curtain call with the audience expressing their appreciation for the performance they had attended. by Kristen Morale - Aug 2, 2015

The Chatham Drama Guild, established eighty-four years ago and boasting one of the only truly volunteer managed community theater groups on the Cape, continues its summer season with Guys and Dolls, the well-known tale of gamblers-by-trade Nathan Detroit, Sky Masterson and their 'dolls' in the midst of Detroit's permanent floating crap game - all in the heart of 1950's New York City. The Directed by Pam Banas and musically directed by Charlie Gregson, Guild has succeeded in bringing to a Cape Cod audience a very heartfelt, genuine production of this classic musical which does well as well to capture the psychological and emotion angst of the characters as it does the tender and hopeful nature of those same individuals in the midst of falling in love - that is, in love with something other than their chance-based lives. Although I am not as familiar with the plays of Anton Chekhov as some, Christopher Durang's play, Vanya & Sonia & Masha & Spike, doesn't require a pop quiz of Chekhovian references in order for one to enjoy the show. This character study into the lives of three squabbling, middle-aged siblings has enough humor and poignancy in it so you don't have to have your SparkNotes handy to enjoy it. The play, produced by Leslie Nichols and directed by Fred Helsel, plays at the Santa Paula Theater Center through August 16. (more...)
