by Anthony Hazzard - Nov 30, 2016

The holidays came early this year to the Noel S. Ruiz Theatre in Oakdale as they present the blissful Irving Berlin tuner 'White Christmas' through December 18. Misunderstandings, mayhem, and mountains of mistletoe all ensure an endearing love story and the happiest holiday for all. (more...)

BWW Review: Stunning WHITE CHRISTMAS Returns to the Pantages for One Week Only
by Don Grigware - Nov 30, 2016

White Christmas, always a treat on film (1954), creates a unique and refreshing glow on stage. The original Broadway and touring productions - the first national tour played the Pantages in 2005 - were gloriously directed by Walter Bobbie and choreographed by Randy Skinner, who turned the second act opener 'I Love a Piano' into one of the most inventive and lively tap sequences ever. Now in a short tour and directed and choreographed by Skinner, White Christmas The Musical finally returns to the Pantages but only for a week, through December 4. This is a sparkling production with terrifically paced staging and superior choreography by Skinner and a sturdy acting ensemble which includes the presence of  the delightfully funny Lorna Luft as Martha Watson. Yes, it's a frothy concoction and weak on plot, but so heartwarming and... with the spectacular Irving Berlin tunes, who cares? Run to get tickets while they are available! (more...)

This is the sort of production you can slip into easily; find yourself there in the story. It's an ordinary story about an extraordinary thing-yet another reason to love it. The Girl reignites the music in the Guy; she takes him in hand (and hoover) to fall slowly back into song, back into hope, and back into love. (more...)

BWW Review: Cleveland's BWU and Its Effect on Broadway
by Roy Berko - Nov 21, 2016

Several weeks ago, in my review of Baldwin Wallace University's production of WEST SIDE STORY I stated, 'BWU's Music Theater program is nationally recognized for its quality, as evidenced by the number of its graduates who have light up the Broadway theater scene and touring productions. Of those in the WEST SIDE STORY cast I stated: 'Broadway bound? Colton Ryan, though not the tall macho leading man type, should find a place on the Great White Way in roles for the young, clean scrubbed type who have big voices.' (more...)

BWW Review: Attending A MARVELOUS PARTY at Winter Park Playhouse
by Kimberly Moy - Nov 14, 2016

The Winter Park Playhouse brings to life the musings and music of English playwright, composer, master-of-all-things theater Noel Coward. As a playwright, many of Coward's works still make their way into modern theater repertoire including BLITHE SPIRIT, PRIVATE LIVES and many more. A MARVELOUS PARTY is a light show that strings together songs and anecdotes written by Coward. Though slightly high-brow, I like to think of his work as observational satire and a peek into the life of a successful theater genius. (more...)

BWW Review: SUMMER RAIN is Simply Charming Home-Grown Musical at New Theatre
by Brodie Paparella - Dec 5, 2016

It is a wonderful time of year to be reminded of the romanticism inherent in the Australian outback; a topic more frequently explored of late for links to our history, our current social climate and our connection as a nation. Summer Rain is the work of two Australian theatrical legends, Nick Enright and Terence Clark. Summer Rain is no Boy from Oz, but this production is undeniably charming, a quintessential musical, and a wonderful ode to Australia's natural treasures. Debuting as director, Trent Kidd has shown great skill with stagecraft and character development, alongside his clear choreography talents which truly thrive in Summer Rain. (more...)
