THE CHRONOCAR by Debut Author Steve Bellinger is ReleasedTHE CHRONOCAR by Debut Author Steve Bellinger is Released
by BWW News Desk - Jul 29, 2015

Barking Rain Press, a non-profit fiction publisher, announced the paperback and eBook release of the science fiction time travel thriller 'The Chronocar' by Chicago, Illinois, debut author Steve Bellinger. Simmie Johnson was born the son of a slave. He was also a genius. After earning a PhD in physics from Tuskegee Institute, he wrote a paper outlining a theory for time travel, including plans for a time machine-called a Chronocar-which was published in a scientific journal in the early 1900s. Since the technology required to build the Chronocar did not yet exist, the paper and its brilliant writer faded into obscurity. A century later, a young Illinois Tech student, Tony Carpenter, discovers the journal article and decides to build a Chronocar so he can travel back to 1919 to meet the black scientist he hopes to emulate. Unfortunately, time is not on his side. Dr. Johnson is living in Chicago's Black Belt with his beautiful daughter-and Tony arrives just in time for the bloodiest race riot in the city's history. Can Tony use the Chronocar to save his new friends, or will his attempt forever alter the future he hopes to return to? Ask for 'The Chronocar' at your favorite bookstore, or buy it online at the Barking Rain Press website, Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble, Books-a-Million, Powells, Waterstones, and many other Internet bookstores. It is also available as an eBook through Amazon Kindle, Barnes & Noble Nook, iTunes iBooks, Kobo, Content Reserve/Overdrive, the Barking Rain Press website and many other outlets worldwide. Interested readers can preview the first four chapters of 'The Chronocar' for free by visiting the Barking Rain Press website at barkingRainpress.org. Reflections: What SINGIN' IN THE RAIN Lacks in Star Power, It Makes Up for In Extended Scenes, Live SpectacleReflections: What SINGIN' IN THE RAIN Lacks in Star Power, It Makes Up for In Extended Scenes, Live Spectacle
by Oliver Oliveros - Jul 28, 2015

When compared to 'Sunset Boulevard,' (orig. film: 1950; West End premiere: 1993), which follows the same classic film-to-stage pedigree as 'Singin' In the Rain' (orig. film: 1952; West End premiere: 1983) and tackles the same dilemma of making the transition from silent films to talkies in the 1920s--albeit of psychological melodrama in genre compared to the latter's rollicking parody--'Sunset Boulevard' had big stars of stage and screen who headlined West End and Broadway, i.e. Patti LuPone, Glenn Close, and Elaine Paige who played the faded silent movie star Norma Desmond. Whereas 'Singin' In the Rain' did not delve into such stunt casting from the onset--unless you consider Tommy Steele, who originated the role of Don Lockwood in the West End, as big as Elvis Presley or Gene Kelly, the silver screen's original Lockwood. BWW Reviews: Musical Theatre West Revisits the Glorious Feeling of SINGIN' IN THE RAINBWW Reviews: Musical Theatre West Revisits the Glorious Feeling of SINGIN' IN THE RAIN
by Michael L. Quintos - Jul 24, 2015

As the cliche goes, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. That is perhaps partly the philosophy behind the rather faithful stage adaptation of the gloriously wonderful movie musical SINGIN' IN THE Rain, now once again charmingly replicated in a smile-inducing local production at Musical Theatre West that continues through July 26 at the Carpenter Performing Arts Center in Long Beach. An almost scene-by-scene, note-for-note recreation of the superb cinematic masterpiece, the musical theater iteration of SINGIN' IN THE Rain smartly and painstakingly reenacts every key moment and memorable musical happenstance from the 1952 movie that many have since heralded as one of the best movie musicals of all time. With MTW's latest revival specifically, director/choreographer Jon Engstrom has helmed a joyful production worth experiencing, whether it's your first or hundredth time. And, yes, it Rains on stage... and it's a sight to behold! (more...)

by Alix Cohen - Jul 23, 2015

Watching Stacey Kent perform Portuguese music with her producer, writer, arranger, and saxophonist Jim Tomlinson (who also happens to be her husband), and her band has got to be the next best thing to actually being in Brazil. As she exhibited last night at Birdland for two shows, Kent gets this genre perhaps better than any other contemporary American performer. She performs with palpable sensitivity and infectious joie de viere. Translated songs or those written by Tomlinson with such collaborators as author Kazu Ishiguro and poet Antonio Ladeira are phrased with deep romanticism and offered with refreshingly unfussy brio.
