BWW Reviews: 'Roxie Rocks CHICAGO'- As Does the Rest of Summer Stock Austin
by Wendi Reichstein - Jul 31, 2014

As a self-proclaimed theatre nerd, I have a bit of an embarrassing confession: I have never seen Chicago on stage. I've belted the soundtrack, seen the movie countless times, and even walked past the Ambassador Theater on Broadway (that counts-right?). But I had not yet seen this musical favorite live, until Wednesday night at the opening of Summer Stock Austin's Chicago. And yes, was it all that and a side of jazz. (more...)

CABARET LIFE NYC: Anatomy of a Duo Show--Classy, Entertaining, Yet Flawed KT Sullivan/Jeff Harnar Sondheim Set at the Beechman Is All About Choices
by Stephen Hanks - Jul 25, 2014

The current Stephen Sondheim tribute show, Our Time, starring KT Sullivan and Jeff Harnar at the Laurie Beechman (which I attended on July 9 and 16; there are two more Wednesday performances at 6pm on August 6, 13), is a charming, classy, and entertaining affair. But it also includes enough flaws in execution that prevent it from being truly great. For one thing, it doesn't really feel like a duo show. It's more like two solo performances within one show, where the performers fit in a couple of numbers together to justify the concept. A critique of the Sullivan/Harnar Sondheim set provides an interesting opportunity to analyze the anatomy of a duo show and the choices that can make it workor not. (more...)

Top-5 Possible Roles for Portia De Rossi on SCANDAL; Is Pope & Associates About to Get 'Funkey'?
by Jennifer McHugh - Jul 24, 2014

I don't know about you, but I am just now beginning to recover from all of the events in SCANDAL's third season finale. It seems we were left with pretty much every single character's future with a giant question mark hanging over their head. I mean, we're not foolish enough to believe that Jake and Olivia escaped into eternal bliss, right? RIGHT? Not when Daddy Pope's literally got a guy inside the White House who killed the President's son. (Is it too late to say SPOILER ALERT?) (more...)

BWW Reviews: Cabrillo Brings Back BYE BYE BIRDIE
by Don Grigware - Jul 21, 2014

Ah, the rhythms of the 50s/60s! Got 'A Lot of Livin' to Do'! Lee Adams and Charles Strouse wrote the music and lyrics of Bye Bye Birdie to honor a generation of fans who swooned and literally gave themselves over to the rock and roll of Elvis Presley. Conrad Birdie (Austin MacPhee) is an obvious play on Conway Twitty, a rock star of that era who later became a superstar in the world of country. When Elvis went into the army, he became a national hero. Female teens adored him and would give up their own boyfriends just to be near him. This is Bye Bye Birdie in a nutshell now in a rollicking revival at Cabrillo Music Theatre through July 27. (more...)

BWW Reviews: TAME. Offers Stirring Drama at Capital Fringe
by Jennifer Perry - Jul 21, 2014

'TAME.' is one of those plays in this year's Capital Fringe Festival that's a bit of a rarity among all of the zany offerings. It's something new, something inspired by the classics, something that offers a rich story, and something that's very well-acted. It actually turned out to be one of the offerings this year that I enjoyed the most. (more...)
