BWW Reviews: CHICAGO Rox Manila; Show Runs Until 12/21BWW Reviews: CHICAGO Rox Manila; Show Runs Until 12/21
by BWW News Desk - Dec 9, 2014

The much-anticipated Manila premiere of Broadway's longest-running American musical, CHICAGO, razzle-dazzled audiences with its hard-hitting numbers (All That Jazz, Cell Block Tango, Razzle Dazzle), which speak of passion, treachery, murder, and glossed-over celebrity, on opening night. Leading the pack of an all-American cast of Broadway veterans is Bianca Marroquin who rocked Solaire Resort and Casino's The Theatre with her multi-faceted portrayal of accused murderess Roxie Hart. The strong ensemble, while writhing, gyrating, and exploding to John Kander's music, provided the backdrop to Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse's dark satirical commentary of the 1920s Prohibition-era Chicago. When the audience rose to a standing ovation at the end of the show, it was palpable that even in these modern days, it is impossible to convict good looking murderesses. (more...)

BWW Reviews: The Crackerjack Show '11 O'Clock Numbers' Triumphantly Returns -- This Time at 7 O'Clock at BirdlandBWW Reviews: The Crackerjack Show '11 O'Clock Numbers' Triumphantly Returns -- This Time at 7 O'Clock at Birdland
by Alix Cohen - Dec 9, 2014

Five years ago, Michael Feinstein approached ubiquitous producer Scott Siegel about 'coming up with a club act' for Feinstein's at the Loews Regency. The title 11 O'Clock Numbers at 11 O'Clock was Siegel's eureka moment. 'Broadway shows used to start at 8:30,' Siegel reminded us. 'The 11 o'clock number was meant to shake an audience awake in time to enjoy the end of a show.' Every Thursday night until its host venue sadly shuttered in January 2013, the series packed'm in for soaring voices and musical bonhomie. Since then, this particular collaboration of vocalists--Scott Coulter, Christina Bianco, and Carole J. Bufford--have twice appeared in the Broadway at Birdland series, but now the 11 O'Clock numbers are featured at 7 O'Clock. Not only does the concept hold up, but also its artists having matured, may even be better. (more...)

BWW Reviews: THE GRINCH Stage Musical Offers Fun, Kid-Friendly TheatricsBWW Reviews: THE GRINCH Stage Musical Offers Fun, Kid-Friendly Theatrics
by Michael L. Quintos - Dec 12, 2014

I'd have to be, well... a mean ol' Grinch to say anything remotely negative about the new non-equity touring stage production of DR. SEUSS' HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS! THE MUSICAL, so I'll try my best to keep it to a minimum. Honestly though, it's really not that hard, actually, because---surprise---the show, for the most part, is an honest-to-goodness adorable little musical with lots of kid-friendly comedy and a feel-good holiday message that really softens even the hardest of cynics. And yes, even I myself found my heart growing three sizes during the course of the show's smile-inducing opening night performance at Costa Mesa's Segerstrom Center for the Arts (it continues here for a brief run through December 14). Sure, the show isn't exactly the pinnacle of musical theater excellence, nor does it even attempt to be. But what it lacks in roof-raising, show-stopping splendor, it makes up for ten-fold in pure pluck---the kind that kids, especially, will eat right up like candy. (more...)
