Hard to believe, but it's been four years since we sat down with Jeremy Benton, whom we've since referred to as Broadway's Best Tap Dancer every chance we've had, and now it seems as that title has become a self-fulfilling prophecy. Just yesterday, Benton - a native of Springfield, Tennessee - was honored with a nomination for a Fred and Adele Astaire Award in the category for best off-Broadway male dancer, heralding his critically acclaimed role in Cagney, the Musical. by BWW News Desk - Apr 30, 2016

Memphis is set in the 1950s where rock 'n' roll was born: the seedy underground nightclubs, radio stations and recording studios of the musically-rich Tennessee city. With an original book and score by David Bryan (keyboard player, songwriter and founding member of Bon Jovi) and Joe DiPietro (I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change and All Shook Up!), it tells the fictional story of Huey Calhoun, a white radio DJ with a passion for R&B music and Felicia Farrell, an up-and-coming black club singer that he meets one fateful night on Beale Street. Despite the objections of their loved ones (Huey's close-minded Mama and Felicia's cautious brother, a club owner), they embark on a dangerous affair. Filled with high-octane dancing, songs that perfectly capture the era, and an absorbing tale of fame and forbidden love, the show offers soaring emotion and roof-raising rock 'n' roll. BWW Review: CHARM at Mixed Blood Theatre Charms with a Powerful True Story and Ground-Breaking CastingBWW Review: CHARM at Mixed Blood Theatre Charms with a Powerful True Story and Ground-Breaking Casting
by Jill Schafer - Apr 27, 2016

Sometimes theater is more than just theater. Sometimes theater is about giving a voice to people whose voices are not often heard. Sometimes theater is about increasing our understanding of people who seem different than us, but who really are the same. Sometimes theater is about giving everyone a chance to see their lives and experiences reflected back at them, validating their existence and importance in the world. Mixed Blood Theatre's work often checks all of the above boxes, as is the case with the new play CHARM by Phillip Dawkins. Inspired by the true story of a transgender woman who teaches a charm school to homeless and at risk transgender youth, CHARM premiered in Chicago last fall, but Mixed Blood's production is the first to include five transgender actors in the cast, which lends an air of poignant authenticity to this moving, funny, and at times difficult story. THE DEATH OF A BLACK MAN (A WALK BY) Set for Theater for the New CityTHE DEATH OF A BLACK MAN (A WALK BY) Set for Theater for the New City
by BWW News Desk - Apr 27, 2016

You can't understand a man, the proverb goes, until you've walked a mile in his shoes. But who, among us, has tasted the paranoia, dread and loss from gun violence that is, shockingly, common to urban high schoolers and their families? 'The Death of a Black Man (A Walk By)' by William Electric Black suggests the experience poetically, using using hip hop verse, chanting, songs and poetry. The audience walks through a variety of uniquely-designed theater spaces and environments suggesting the events before and after a shooting in an urban playground. It's like a day lived with urban gun violence, complete with a candle lit memorial service, police investigations, protests and the actual shootings. This is the third in a series of five plays by William Electric Black, collectively called 'GUNPLAYS,' that address inner city violence and guns. Theater for the New City, 155 First Ave (East Village), will present the work June 2 to 19, 2016 directed by the author.  The piece was scheduled for June to support Gun Awareness Month. (more...)

BWW Review: Children's Theatre Company World Premiere of DIARY OF A WIMPY KID: THE MUSICAL is IrresistibleBWW Review: Children's Theatre Company World Premiere of DIARY OF A WIMPY KID: THE MUSICAL is Irresistible
by Jill Schafer - Apr 26, 2016

DIARY OF A WIMPY KID: THE MUSICAL - I've got an animal heart for you. Even though I have no familiarity with the successful book series or movies, I felt obliged to see Children's Theater Company's world premiere musical adaptation because of the talk about a possibly Broadway run, and producer Kevin McCollum also produced my favorite musical RENT. But all sense of obligation quickly went out the window as the show won me over with it's clever and musically diverse score, universally relatable story of a kid trying to find himself in middle school, and most of all this incredible cast of mostly Twin Cities youth. Whether you're a kid stuck in the middle (school), or a jaded grown-up, DIARY OF A WIMPY KID: THE MUSICAL is simply irresistible, and I think it's going to go far. (more...)

BWW Review: Rarely Revived It's a Bird...It's a Plane...IT'S SUPERMAN THE MUSICALBWW Review: Rarely Revived It's a Bird...It's a Plane...IT'S SUPERMAN THE MUSICAL
by Don Grigware - Apr 25, 2016

Wham! Pow! Boom! Up and away, it's Superman! Growing up in the 50s I couldn't wait for the next weekly adventure-filled installment of Supie and Lois Lane, Jimmy Olsen, Perry White and the Daily Planet on the small television screen. It was thrilling to see a man go into a telephone booth and change from street clothes into tights - even if they were baggy - and fly off - imagine! - to save the world from crime and destruction. It didn't matter that it was pure fantasy and that he he was only a comic book hero. Superman brought lots of excitement into our young lives. In 1966, the same musical composers who wrote the successful Broadway hit Bye Bye Birdie, Charles Strouse and Lee Adams, penned It's a Bird...It's a Plane...It's Superman! The New Musical Comedy and in spite of the great reviews, it did not catch on with the public, so quickly fizzled. Now 50 years later, what a camp to look back and laugh at all the silliness and innocence of that era, for the Superman musical is loaded with clumsy, goofy, campy laughs. Now onstage in a rare revival ... It's Superman receives a terrifically entertaining production at the Grove Theatre in Upland. (more...)
