Norfolk & Norwich Festival, one of the biggest arts festivals in the UK, has today announced further events for its 2016 Festival. With the full programme still to be announced, further highlights revealed today include a brand new production of William Shakespeare's The Tempest directed by Artistic Director of Norfolk & Norwich Festival William Galinsky at the Great Yarmouth Hippodrome - Britain's only surviving purpose circus building erected in 1903 and Wild Life, an extraordinary collaboration between CAMPO's Artistic Collaborator Pol Heyvaert and young singer-songwriters from across Norfolk. Wild Life developed organically from the lives of the performers, and focuses on the songs they have written and what science tells us about how teenagers' brains work. The Festival have also announced Fierce Light, the world premiere event and exhibition from 14-18 NOW bringing together poets of international standing with contemporary film makers and visual artists to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the First World War, Chris Thorpe's acclaimed plays Confirmation and Am I Dead Yet? about political extremism and what happens when we die respectively, an evening of French song and poetry with the powerful and unconventional ensemble troupe, I Fagiolini, a one-night only performance by the sensational singer-songwriter and political activist Billy Bragg and the English indie band Tindersticks. The 68th season of the Festival d'Aix-en-Provence, under the leadership of General Manager Bernard Foccroulle, will present an international roster of artists in six major vocal productions plus an opera-in-concert from June 30 - July 20. New Festival productions this year are Mozart's Cosi fan tutte directed by Christophe Honore and conducted by Louis Langree with the Freiburger Barockorchester; Debussy's Pelleas et Melisande led by Esa-Pekka Salonen with the Philharmonia Orchestra; and completing the Festival's Handel Cycle, Il Trionfo del tempo e del disinganno conducted by Emmanuelle Haimwith Le Concert d'Astree. In addition, the 2016 season will feature a concert version of Rameau's Zoroastre with Raphael Pichon leading the orchestra and choir of the Ensemble Pygmalion. (more...)

Stephen Adly Guirgis has made a name for himself for creating glimpses inside the worlds of the rougher and edgier parts of town. Places inhabited by junkies, hookers and criminals like those in his shows 'In Arabia We'd All Be Kings' currently at Theater Schmeater and 'The Motherf**ker with the Hat' currently from Washington Ensemble Theatre (yes, we have two Guirgis shows in town right now). But while the characters in both shows are well written and developed and thoroughly engaging, those in 'In Arabia …' seem to be lacking a complete narrative or plot making it more of a character study than a story. Percussion in a program of new collaborative works by composers Glenn Kotche, Steven Mackey, and Shara Worden. With Glenn Kotche, percussionist for the Chicago-based rock band Wilco, S? performs the world premiere of Kotche's Migrations as well as his Drumkit Quartets, a work in the ensemble's repertoire since 2011, set to be released by Cantaloupe Records on February 27.
