Three of Chicago's leading theater artists - actor James Vincent Meredith, and director/educators Henry Godinez of Northwestern University and Susan Padveen of Columbia College will appear following performances of the play detailing the story of Ira Aldridge, who in 1833 became the first black actor to play Othello on a London stage. American Theatre magazine, published by Theatre Communications Group (TCG), has released its annual October Season Preview issue, which includes lists of the Top 10 Most-Produced Plays and Top 20 Most-Produced Playwrights for the coming season. Robert Askins' Hand to God will be the most-produced play, with 13 total productions, and August Wilson will be the most-produced playwright, with 18 total productions. Last night two-time Tony Award-winner Viola Davis made history as the first African-American to win an Emmy in the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series category. She was recognized for her role as the brilliant attorney and professor Annalise Keating on the Shonda Rhimes drama HOW TO GET AWAY WITH MURDER. In addition to her Emmy and Tonys, Davis has won three Drama Desks and three SAG Awards. During her acceptance speech, Davis quoted Harriet Tubman and talked about breaking boundaries and redefining what Hollywood thinks of as beautiful. (more...)

Tampa Shakespeare to Offer Free Performances at Waterworks Park

Tampa Shakespeare Festival will be launching their second season on Thursday, March 17th at Waterworks Park in downtown Tampa with William Shakespeare's Richard III and Much Ado About Nothing playing in repertory on alternating nights. The festival will run from Thursday, March 17th until Sunday, April 3rd. Performances will begin at 6pm Thursdays through Saturdays and at 2pm on Sundays. Admission is free to the general public. Everyman Theatre is excited to announce the introduction of a new series of informal play readings. The inaugural series, titled "Women's Voices in American Theatre," will highlight some of theatre's greatest women playwrights through four staged readings curated by the women of Everyman's Resident Acting Company.  The readings will take place in the theatre's second-floor rehearsal hall, which will be transformed into a funky stripped-down performance space, on four Monday evenings:  April 25, May 9, May 23 and June 6 from 7PM to 9PM.
