Broadway Scenic Designer Robert Brill Named La Jolla Playhouse's First Artist-in-Residence

La Jolla Playhouse announced today that nationally-renowned scenic designer Robert Brill has been named the theatre's inaugural Artist-in-Residence. This new, multi-month residency program, supported in part by a generous donation from Playhouse Director Emeritus Des McAnuff, is designed to give artists the freedom to focus on their ongoing body of work while becoming fully integrated into all aspects of the institution, from the stage to the boardroom to the classroom. In addition to designing the sets for His GirlFriday and Sideways this season, Brill will participate in the Playhouse's artistic planning, education and outreach activities, lead master classes at UC Dan Diego and serve as a community liaison for arts advocacy in San Diego, among other Playhouse activities. Five of the entertainment world's leading ladies will perform in New Orleans in 2013 as Seth Rudetsky's popular Broadway Concert Series makes the leap to NOCCA's Lupin Hall from its summer home at The Art House in Provincetown, MA. Patti LuPone, two-time Tony winner for Gypsy and as the legendary original Evita, will appear for two shows only on January 7th at 6:30 and 8:30. Sutton Foster, two-time Tony-winner for this year's Anything Goes and previously for Thoroughly Modern Millie and star of the ABC Family series Bunheads arrives for one show only on March 2nd at 7:30. Megan Mullally, two-time Emmy-winning star of TV's Will and Grace and star of Broadway's Young Frankenstein performs two shows only on April 6th at 7:30 and 9:30. Audra McDonald, a five-time Tony Award winner and recent star of Porgy and Bess on Broadway and TV's Private Practice will make her New Orleans debut with two shows only on May 18 at 7:30 and 9:30. Betty Buckley, the Tony winning legendary star of Cats and Sunset Boulevard will close the series on June 1 with two shows only at 7:30 and 9:30. The visiting Broadway artists will also be giving master classes for the NOCCA Institute's high school-aged musical theatre students. The Theater Project Presents HAVING OUR SAY, 4/4-21

Sadie and Bessie Delany, each having passed the century mark, gained international recognition in 1991 when their book Having Our Say (with NY Times writer Amy Hill Hearth) spent six months on the best-seller lists. In the play by Emily Mann, the audience is invited to spend an evening with Sadie and Bessie, two VERY old ladies whose infectious charm and intelligence guides us through a century and a half of America's social history. Their recounting of family stories about the changes witnessed by the Delany family from slavery through the close of the twentieth century vividly recalls the painfully slow progress of race relations in the United States. Berkeley Rep Premieres THE HOUSE THAT WILL NOT STAND, Now thru 3/16

Berkeley Repertory Theatre announces the world premiere of The House that will not Stand, a historical comedic drama commissioned from award-winning poet-playwright and Oakland native Marcus Gardley. Sensuous, witty, heartbreaking, and uplifting - The House that will not Stand unearths a story about free women of color in 1836 New Orleans, where black Creole women entered into common-law marriages with affluent white men. When her wealthy lover mysteriously dies, Beartrice Albans' foundation of security hangs precariously by a thread. She is left to fend for her three unwed daughters in a world where freedom must be carefully negotiated. Told in a rich and lyrical river of words, this new play was developed through The Ground Floor: Berkeley Rep's Center for the Creation and Development of New Work. It's helmed by Patricia McGregor, whose many credits include the celebrated production of Spunk at California Shakespeare Theater. The House that will not Stand begins previews on Berkeley Rep's intimate Thrust Stage today, January 31, opens on Wednesday, February 5 and runs through Sunday, March 16, 2014. (more...)

The Omaha Community Playhouse will produce Having Our Say, Jan. 17-Feb. 9, 2014. Meet Bessie and Sadie Delany. At ages 101 and 103, these resilient African-American sisters have lived through historic events, such as the Civil Rights Movement, Jim Crow laws and women's suffrage. These cultural pioneers never married, stating "we were too smart, too independent for most men" and pursued education and careers during a time when it was unheard of to do so. Their endearing stories are humorous and historical as they invite the audience into their home for an evening of memories in this touching, biographical, two-person play, starring real-life sisters Camille Metoyer Moten and Lanette Metoyer Moore. Patti LuPone, Sutton Foster, Betty Buckley and More to Appear on Seth Rudetsky's Broadway Concert Series in New Orleans, Beginning 1/7

Five of the entertainment world's leading ladies will perform in New Orleans in 2013 as Seth Rudetsky's popular Broadway Concert Series makes the leap to NOCCA's Lupin Hall from its summer home at The Art House in Provincetown, MA. Patti LuPone, two-time Tony winner for Gypsy and as the legendary original Evita, will appear for two shows only on January 7th at 6:30 and 8:30. Sutton Foster, two-time Tony-winner for this year's Anything Goes and previously for Thoroughly Modern Millie and star of the ABC Family series Bunheads arrives for one show only on March 2nd at 7:30. Megan Mullally, two-time Emmy-winning star of TV's Will and Grace and star of Broadway's Young Frankenstein performs two shows only on April 6th at 7:30 and 9:30. Audra McDonald, a five-time Tony Award winner and recent star of Porgy and Bess on Broadway and TV's Private Practice will make her New Orleans debut with two shows only on May 18 at 7:30 and 9:30. Betty Buckley, the Tony winning legendary star of Cats and Sunset Boulevard will close the series on June 1 with two shows only at 7:30 and 9:30. The visiting Broadway artists will also be giving master classes for the NOCCA Institute's high school-aged musical theatre students. All five concerts are produced by Mark Cortale, long time producer/manager of Jeffery Roberson aka Varla Jean Merman, and will be hosted by Sirius/XM radio star Seth Rudetsky at the piano. Sadie and Bessie Delany, each having passed the century mark, gained international recognition in 1991 when their book Having Our Say (with NY Times writer Amy Hill Hearth) spent six months on the best-seller lists. In the play by Emily Mann, the audience is invited to spend an evening with Sadie and Bessie, two VERY old ladies whose infectious charm and intelligence guides us through a century and a half of America's social history. Their recounting of family stories about the changes witnessed by the Delany family from slavery through the close of the twentieth century vividly recalls the painfully slow progress of race relations in the United States. Four Local High School Students Receive Joseph Curka Playwrighting Prize at Young Playwrights Competition

Eight gifted students were honored at THE THEATER PROJECT'S eleventh annual Young Playwrights Competition Performance and Awards Ceremony on Saturday, March 16. The four prize winners received savings bonds and saw their work performed by the professional actors of THE THEATER PROJECT at the ceremony, held at the Cranford Community Center with the support of the Friends of the Cranford Library. Four additional writers were presented with honorable mention citations and gift certificates. (more...)
