BWW Review: CentreStage's AN ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE - And Just What Would Ibsen Write About Flint, Michigan?
by Joseph Baker - May 2, 2016

As the curtain prepares to close on the theatre season in Memphis, 'tried and true' standards -- A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE at Germantown Community Theatre and HAY FEVER at Theatre Memphis -- are competing stage to stage with powerhouse musicals -- MEMPHIS THE MUSICAL at Playhouse on the Square. Easy to overlook is CentreStage Theatre's 'small scale' but timely production of Henrik Ibsen's AN ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE, staged at the Evergreen Theatre. While the intimate confines of that particular venue necessarily limit the production values that might be found elsewhere, the themes and surprising ironic twists, as well as the commitment of Director Marler Stone and his ensemble, are as relevant and riveting as an audience might wish -- Just how much 'truth' should be shared with the public? When funds go 'head to head' with environmental and health concerns, which will out? When democracy is allowed to go 'full steam ahead,' are there inherent dangers? Frankly, the play -- written decades ago -- reminds me how far ahead of his time Ibsen was as a writer. (more...)

BWW Interview: Katherine Bottoms of PETER AND THE STARCATCHER at Actors' Repertory Theatre Of Simi
by Cary Ginell - Aug 10, 2016

Today we meet Katherine Bottoms, a young actress who we hope you will be able to see on stage some day before fame and fortune takes her away from us. Katherine was born in Palm Springs but has lived in Santa Barbara most of her life. Her father and three uncles were actors so it was only natural that Katherine would become one as well. She performed in musical theater at Santa Barbara High School and was attending Santa Barbara City College when she decided acting was what she was going to do with her life. While in high school, she got a manager and was driving to auditions in Los Angeles so often, she was missing class, so she put off her career until later. Now, at 23, she feels she is ready, and has been making solid appearances in a number of local productions. Her life has been a procession of one show after another ('my longest break was maybe a month'), with her latest being the ARTS production of Peter and the Starcatcher (see our review in this week's Simi Valley Acorn). In the show, she plays Molly, a wide-eyed, independent 13-year-old girl who embarks on an adventure with her father to deliver a trunk of magic star dust to a far-off island. Katherine's bubbly personality and infectious giggle make it easy to accept her as a teenager, but this is only one aspect of her versatility as an actress. (more...)

BWW Review: Enthralling Performances and Smart Writing Make BAD JEWS a Comedic Success
by Maggie Yates - Apr 22, 2016

Based on the title, one might assume that Joshua Harmon's 'Bad Jews' is a play more specifically rooted in Judaism that it actually is. While Harmon's play does revolve around several characters vying for a relic from their recently deceased grandfather, the play is actually not about what makes someone a 'Bad' Jew, but more broadly, what makes someone a bad person. BWW Review: Rosemary Loar Justifies 'Greatest Hits' Status for Her 2006 QUANDO SWING With Powerful Revival At The Metropolitan Room
by Alix Cohen - Apr 15, 2016

I didn't catch Rosemary Loar's original 2006 presentation of 'Quando Swing,' but I can't imagine it performed with more muscular honesty than it was Wednesday night at the Metropolitan Room in the latest monthly installment of Producer Stephen Hanks' 'New York Cabaret's Greatest Hits' series.
