In Iggy Pop Life Class, Turner Prize-winning artist Jeremy Deller uses the traditional life-model drawing class to stage a performative event with Iggy Pop as model and subject. She was nominated for the 1988 Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series for St. Elsewhere, and the 1993 Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical for My Favorite Year. She had previously received a Golden Globe Award nomination for the film version of My Favorite Year (1982). Her other film appearances include The Delta Force (1986), Harry and the Hendersons (1987), Beaches (1988), My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002) and My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 (2016). Kazan made her Broadway debut in The Happiest Girl in the World in 1961 followed by Bravo Giovanni (1962). On Wednesday, October 19, 2016 at 7pm, Russian-American violinist Yevgeny Kutik, known for his 'dark-hued tone and razor-sharp technique' (The New York Times) and pianist/composer Timo Andres, will perform a concert at National Sawdust (80 North 6th St.). The performance is part of Andres' engagement as a National Sawdust curator for the 2016-2017 season, and will include a selection of works from Kutik's new album, Words Fail, out October 28 on Marquis Classics, including two of Mendelssohn's Songs without Words (arr. Friedrich Hermann), the New York premiere of Andres' Words Fail, and the world premiere of Michael Gandolfi's Arioso Doloroso/Estatico, both of which Kutik commissioned for the album. The duo will also perform Nico Muhly's Compare Notes, Stravinsky's Suite Italienne, and the world premiere of Andres' arrangement of a short work by Janacek titled Words Fail.  (more...)

Louis Karchin's Jane Eyre, a full-length opera in three acts with a libretto by Diane Osen based on Charlotte Bronte's novel, will receive its world premiere on Thursday, October 20, 7:30pm with a second performance on Saturday, October 22, 8pm at The Kaye Playhouse (Hunter College).  Jane Eyre is Karchin's second opera, composed in 2014, following his critically acclaimed one-act comic opera Romulus.   The work draws on a cast of 9 singers, an orchestra of 34 musicians, and chorus.  The production coincides with the 200th anniversary year of the birth of writer Charlotte Bronte.
