In the summer of 2014, as Malian guitarist Vieux Farka Touré passed through New York, he got together with American vocalist Julia Easterlin for an impromptu studio session. Exclusive: Moments in the Woods- Inside the INTO THE WOODS Original Cast Reunion at BAMExclusive: Moments in the Woods- Inside the INTO THE WOODS Original Cast Reunion at BAM
by Randy Rainbow - Jun 29, 2015

Can you believe it's been almost 28 years since the original production of Into the Woods opened on Broadway? Seems like only yesterday my mother was dragging a 6-year-old me, literally kicking and screaming, from below the marquee of the Martin Beck Theatre (now the Al Hirschfeld) to the Winter Garden Theatre where Cats was playing. (I wanted desperately to see Into the Woods, but a family 'friend' told my parents that Cats would be more appropriate for my age group. Thanks for ruining my life, lady.) In the right light, you can still to this day see my claw marks scraped along 45th Street. (more...)

BWW Reviews: Singer WENDY A. RUSSELL Reflects On Her Life With Solid Debut Show at Don't Tell MamaBWW Reviews: Singer WENDY A. RUSSELL Reflects On Her Life With Solid Debut Show at Don't Tell Mama
by Billie Roe - Jun 28, 2015

From the moment she steps on stage and sings the entire first verse of Gloria Estefan's “Coming Out of the Dark”–-in the dark--you get the impression this is not going to be one of those usual personal journey “I've-been-everywhere-and-done-everything” kind of acts. In her debut show, Where Have I Been All My Life (June 18 and 27 at Don't Tell Mama), Wendy A. Russell vividly presents the personal metamorphosis of a post-modern woman. Quoting Woody Allen's “90% of life is just showing up,” Russell states she showed up 100% of the time and still found life lacking, which is understandable considering she was raised with the “good girl” mentality of the 1960s “Mad Men” era. If the first casualty of war is truth, the first casualty of capitalism is music. Snarky Puppy is a reminder to the American (and thus, global) consciousness that in a culture homogenizing music faster than milk, there are still authentic explosions of human ingenuity in the midst of the seemingly endless mires of tasteless musical capitalism. Thanks to new technologies, artists can now make 3D films and play them like melodic, texture-based visual instruments in real time, performing in duets with acoustic musicians. This pioneering fusion of disciplines will be revealed in a five-week run, June 30 to July 30, at the intimate 13th Street Repertory Theatre, 50 West 13th Street. That venue, under the new leadership of Susan Merson, has been renovated and expanded into an arts center for all disciplines with music, poetry, photography and painting as well as traditional plays.
