BWW Reviews: Adorable ANNIE Returns In (Another) New TourBWW Reviews: Adorable ANNIE Returns In (Another) New Tour
by Michael L. Quintos - May 18, 2015

A safe, inoffensive, cutesy crowd-pleaser for the young and the young-at-heart, the brand new non-Equity touring revival of the Broadway classic ANNIE is eager to please and pretty much does so. The show is, by all accounts, a cute if standard-issue charmer, filled with hummable ear-worm music (via lyricist/book writer Martin Charnin and composer Charles Strouse) and enjoyably hyperbolic characters that audiences will delight in either cheering or jeering. Sure, ANNIE may not be the best or most groundbreaking musical ever created, but it certainly has its heartwarming place in the genre. The tour continues at Orange County's Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa through May 24. (more...)

BWW REVIEW: THE LAST TWO PEOPLE ON EARTH Sing and Dance at A.R.T.BWW REVIEW: THE LAST TWO PEOPLE ON EARTH Sing and Dance at A.R.T.
by Jan Nargi - May 15, 2015

In the famous 1960s hit 'Is That All There Is?' by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, Peggy Lee croons the melancholy lyric, 'If that's all there is, my friend, then, let's keep dancing. Let's break out the booze and have a ball, if that's all there is.' While this song ironically doesn't make it into the eclectic catalog of tunes that fuel THE LAST TWO PEOPLE ON EARTH: AN APOCALYPTIC VAUDEVILLE, currently in its world premiere at the A.R.T. in Cambridge, it could easily have become the show's theme song. When a flood of epic proportions wipes out all but two scraggly survivors, played as a pair of Estragon and Vladimir-style hobos by Mandy Patinkin and Taylor Mac, there is very little left for them to do but sing and dance. BWW Reviews: MURDER FOR TWO a Devious Delight at the GeffenBWW Reviews: MURDER FOR TWO a Devious Delight at the Geffen
by Don Grigware - Jun 5, 2015

No surprise that the little musical comedy with a big bang, Murder for Two by Joe Kinosian and Kellen Blair took off-Broadway by storm in 2013! Described as 'a musical comedy with a dash of Agatha Christie', it actually defies classification. Yes, it has music and a murder mystery plot and is screamingly funny, but it's a whole lot more. Only two performers provide as much or more entertainment than a big over-produced, full cast Broadway show. It covers a lot of ground in 100 minutes and with Jeff Blumenkrantz playing a bevy of suspects, both male and female, Brett Ryback essaying officer Marcus Moskowitz, who is determined to be promoted to detective by the end of the play - both of whom play the piano with a feverish passion - and guided by director Scott Schwartz's super-fast pace and frenetic staging, it's like a colossal roller coaster ride that while barreling along could at any second lose control, but never does. Now onstage at the Geffen Playhouse, audiences will be thrilled and bedazzled through August 2. (more...)
