There is nothing more unnerving than growing up as the odd one. We all remember the weird kid in school, but what ever happen to that person? Although this show was written in the late 70s, there are themes that remain relevant throughout the decades. Young adults will always question what they are taught. For better or worse the students of DO BLACK PATENT LEATHER SHOES… are united by their common Catholic school bond. (more...)

BWW Reviews: HJT's THE MUSIC MANBWW Reviews: HJT's THE MUSIC MAN
by Kristen Morale - Jun 30, 2015

Harwich Junior Theater, a group that boasts productions of ten plays and musicals each year, numerous community outreach and educational programs and a variety of other annual events, is sure to amaze audiences with its current production. Performing such a well-known musical work and presenting it in a new, exciting way that can appeal to children and adults alike (and children were having their share of fun in the audience, which is always a wonderful thing to see) is a daunting task for any creative team; this is especially true because of how vibrant and exhilarating a musical The Music Man is, and keeping that constant energy alive throughout a rather lengthy production is no easy thing to do. It is without doubt, though, that Director Ethan Paulini truly got it right with this production. (more...)

Josie's Organics Encourages Using All Parts of VegetablesJosie's Organics Encourages Using All Parts of Vegetables
by BWW News Desk - Jun 30, 2015

It has become fairly common to purchase fresh broccoli at the grocery store, cut off the florets once in the kitchen, and discard the stalks before cooking. Throwing out radish greens, beet leaves and chard stalks is pretty typical, too. These vegetable parts actually can be eaten and are quite delicious. It just takes a little knowledge and practice to use them. Josie's Organics is setting out to help home cooks see vegetables in a whole new way - literally - and turn them on to whole vegetable cooking. (more...)

BWW Interviews: Trista Dollison in SISTER ACT: Singing with Great Joy!BWW Interviews: Trista Dollison in SISTER ACT: Singing with Great Joy!
by Carla Maria Verdino-Süllwold - Jun 29, 2015

Every night for the next three weeks Trista Dollison dons a nun's habit and lights up the stage of Brunswick's Maine State Music Theatre with her sassy, soulful, exuberant portrayal of Deloris Van Cartier in Sister Act - the cabaret singer who teaches the joy of music to a sleepy convent of Philadelphia nuns. It's a part she seems born to play and one which reflects her overall love of singing. 'It's a great role, hands down!' she enthuses in the last days of rehearsal before the June 25th opening. 'I had seen the show on Broadway twice and auditioned more than twice, so I am delighted to be here doing it now. It is one of those shows that rides on your back. She has such great songs and is in every scene. She is such a fierce and fabulous character! I love the fact that she starts off in a selfish world and evolves into being the hope for these sisters, and the sisters become the hope for her. The journey within the show is so Beautiful: she realizes she is helping the nuns, and they realize they are helping her. She awakens something that is lost in the convent - a passion and joy.' BWW Reviews: Antaeus Offers Sumptuous and Scintillating PICNICBWW Reviews: Antaeus Offers Sumptuous and Scintillating PICNIC
by Don Grigware - Jun 28, 2015

William Inge's Pulitzer-Prize-winning Picnic depicting a small Kansas town in 1952, its strict code of morality and the inner longings of its people to break away, is perhaps his finest. Now in a stunning production at Antaeus directed ever so lovingly by Cameron Watson and boasting a superlative ensemble - actually three alternating casts: 'Deviled Eggs', 'Stuffed Peppers' and 'Pork Chops', Picnic still holds up some 60 years later, proving the omnipotence of human fragility. My visit was with the 'Deviled Eggs'cast. The music, the clothes, the hairstyles, and the cars are distinctly 50s, but goals, motivations and emotions remain the same. For those unfamiliar with the play or the uber popular 1956 film Picnic starring William Holden and Kim Novak, let's recap the plot briefly. (more...)

by Jill Schafer - Jun 28, 2015

The best thing about living in Minnesota is: a) theater, and b) lakes. Combine those two, and you have about as perfect of a Minnesota experience as you can have. Classical Actors Ensemble is presenting Shakespeare's comedy TWO GENTLEMEN OF VERONA at Lake of the Isles (and other select locations) this summer. I saw the matinee yesterday, and it was a lovely way to spend a picture perfect Minnesota summer afternoon. The show is utterly charming, and something about doing it outdoors in a public space makes Shakespeare seem more immediate, natural, and real, like this is a story that's happening in our world here and now. I sometimes have a hard time getting into Shakespeare, but this company makes it extremely accessible and so easy to become engaged in the stories, characters, and Shakespeare's Beautiful words, which sound modern and fresh in this context. Their mission is: 'Classical Actors Ensemble is dedicated to engaging audiences by capturing the spirit in which plays of the English Renaissance were originally performed - with immediacy, passion, and as popular entertainment.' Mission accomplished. (more...)
