BWW Review: URINETOWN at Phantom Theatre Company
by Allison Rambler - Dec 3, 2016

Almost everyone in the English-speaking world is familiar with the phrase, 'One man's trash is another man's treasure.' However, at URINETOWN: THE MUSICAL, presented by the Phantom Theatre Company, they've taken this adage quite literally, and have transformed Harrisburg's trash into their own musical treasure. BWW Review: PETER AND THE STARCATCHER, Royal and Derngate, 2 December 2016
by Verity Wilde - Dec 3, 2016

Making the European premiere of Peter and the Starcatcher the not-panto Christmas show in Northampton's Royal Theatre may well have been an inspired move by the powers-that-be at Royal and Derngate. There are no soap stars, celebrities or Britain's Got Talent competitors here, but it does feel like it has some shared DNA with a pantomime. There's a dame - Michael Matus's Mrs Bumbrake; an evilly over-the-top baddie you can't take your eyes off in Greg Haiste's Lord Flashheart-eque Black Stache; and Evelyn Hoskins' Molly is practically a Principal Boy. And that's before you get to the fact that this is a prequel of sorts to Peter Pan. There's jokes about farts for children, about British colonialism for grown-ups and about Philip Glass for the geeks. (more...)

BWW Review: Lance Horne Unveils New Work (With a Little Help From His Friends) in First Show of His Residency at Joe's Pub
by Troy Frisby - Dec 3, 2016

Sitting in my seat watching Lance Horne and his many friends perform at NEW WORK NEW WORK I: EXTRAORDINARY DAYS at Joe's Pub, I couldn't help but feel like I was at a really great dinner party (if I were invited to dinner parties with some of the most talented artists in the city). The seats---and, in this case, the songs---were assigned, but the host didn't try and force conversation, and the whole affair was better for it. The purpose of the November 21 show, the first in a year-long residency, was for the successful composer and musical director to showcase his recent work, and, for new material, Horne's songs were quite polished. BWW Review: 21st Annual Youth Musical THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE a Big Hit at the Morgan-Wixson
by Shari Barrett - Dec 2, 2016

Surely most theatre folks have seen productions of the fabulous musical THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE, winner of six Tony Awards including Best Musical, making the show the 2002 season's most awarded new show on Broadway, based on the original story and screenplay by Richard Morris for the 1967 Universal Pictures film directed by George Roy Hill and starring Julie Andrews. I can tell you without a shadow of a doubt, the current production directed by Anne Gesling for the Y.E.S. Youth/Teen Program at Santa Monica's Morgan-Wixson Theatre is just as good as many adult production I have seen, given the cast's talent, Gesling's spot-on fast-paced direction and fabulous 1920's costuming, Daniel Koh's musical direction creating wonderful cast harmonies, and creative choreography by Lauren Blair. BWW Review: 5th Avenue's THE LITTLE MERMAID is Swimmingly Magical
by Jay Irwin - Dec 2, 2016

The original animated film of "Disney's The Little Mermaid" is arguably one of the best of the Disney canon. With songs written by the incredible Alan Menken and Howard Ashman it marked the rebirth of the Disney animated musicals. The original conversion of it into a Broadway musical was not so great. With bad staging and flow, achieving the illusion of swimming by putting the actors on Heelys (shoes with wheels in the heels) so they would glide across stage, and additional songs from Menken and Glenn Slater (owing to the passing of the great Howard Ashman) the show lost much of it's core cleverness and heart in favor of the cliche and gimmicky. Now there's a new version with a reworked book and score and much improved staging which is currently being offered at the 5th Avenue Theatre and while it still may not have that magical greatness of the original film it does manage a magic of its own largely due to some new stage magic and a stellar cast including an Ariel (Diana Huey) who is the most layered, honest, real and still adorable Disney Princess ever.
