Arsenic and Old Lace by American playwright Joseph Kesselring, is a classic staple for modern Theatre enthusiasts. Taking into account the context of the political humor and dark comedy, it is hard to believe this show was first brought to the stage in 1941. A New York Times review of it's opening night stated the play was, 'so funny that none of us will ever forget it.' Best known for it's film of the same decade, this adaptation stars Cary Grant and is directed by the celebrated Frank Capra. After hitting the big screen, this dark comedic farce has been brought to a much wider audience and became a local theatre favorite. (more...)

And for good reason: It's slyly amusing, despite its age, and it features some genuinely engaging (if somewhat despicable, depending upon your perspective) characters who have entertained audiences for 75 years (it bowed on Broadway in 1941). Laurel Mill Playhouse to Present HAPPY HOLLANDAISE

All Claire Finley wants is the perfect Christmas. She's hired the celebrated gourmet chef Vilma Hasenpfeffer to prepare her famous Hasenpfeffer Hollandaise Sauce for her dinner guests, the new vicar and his very pregnant wife, Mary. Unfortunately, however, the chef is late, the guests are early and there are burglars loose in the neighborhood. To top it all off, Claire's father has been hit on the head (with the creche, no less!) and thinks he's the leading man in all of the West End theatre productions of the last 30 years! With the help of her quirky brother George, Claire tries to keep everything together as it continues to unravel in this sidesplitting British farce reminiscent of Arsenic and Old Lace. But once the mayhem dies down and the mixed-up identities unscramble, the true Christmas spirit shines bright in a surprise ending, which involves transformation, forgiveness, and a beautiful new beginning. For the 3rd year, Arts-Louisville.com and Vault 1031 presented the Arts-Louisville.com/Broadway World Theatre Awards honoring excellence in local theatre. In a ceremony attended by over 100 people, competitive awards in 4 divisions were given out to local theatre companies and individual theatre artists after a public vote administered through the Broadway World website.
