A Broadway Musical is a musical with a book by William F. Brown, lyrics by Lee Adams, and music by Charles Strouse. The Broadway production closed after 14 previews and only one performance on December 21, 1978.

The plot about a sleazy white theatre producer's attempt to adapt an African-American writer's serious play for a commercial stage musical was inspired by Adams and Strouse's real-life experiences with their 1964 Broadway production of Golden Boy. The star of the musical-within-the-musical (Sneakers, about a basketball star) closely resembles Golden Boy star Sammy Davis, Jr. When the star opts to leave the show, the playwright - who from the start had resisted turning his work into a musical - steps in and takes on the lead role in order to save the production.

BWW Review: THE WEDDING SINGER at Theatre Three
by Kyle Christopher West - Sep 28, 2016

No matter what year you were born, you've probably teased your hair and belted out every word to 'Livin' On A Prayer,' or 'Don't Stop Believing' at some point in your life. The 1980's are celebrated as a never-ending pop music party that everyone seems to remember fondly - including the younger generation who wasn't even around for it! When Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore fell in love onscreen in the 80's-themed 1998 film THE WEDDING SINGER, a comedic classic was born, eventually becoming inspiration to A Broadway Musical of the same name in 2006. Although the stage version never quite captured audiences or critics like the movie did (perhaps they were 'Too Shy' to pay $111.25 for the blast-from-the-past?), the show was overall well received by audiences. Now, Dallas' theatre-in-the-round, Theatre Three, brings the 'Me decade' to the stage in THE WEDDING SINGER and providing a lot of upbeat, fluffy fun. (more...)

Photo Flash: Sierra Repertory Theatre Presents THE ROBBER BRIDEGROOM
by BWW News Desk - Sep 16, 2016

A rousing, bawdy Southern fairytale from the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Driving Miss Daisy, with one of the only genuine bluegrass scores ever heard in A Broadway Musical. Set in eighteenth century Mississippi, the show follows Jamie Lockhart, a rascally robber of the woods, as he courts Rosamund, the only daughter of the richest planter in the country. The proceedings go awry, however, thanks to a case of double-mistaken identity. Throw in an evil stepmother, intent on Rosamund's demise, and her pea-brained henchman, and you have a rollicking country romp. With its distinct sound, colorful cast and unique form of storytelling, The Robber Bridegroom is a hidden gem! (more...)

BWW Review: ONCE Was Enough at PPAC
by Andria Tieman - Dec 5, 2016

ONCE, the award-winning stage musical based on the award-winning film of the same name, is an obvious addition to Broadway.  Featuring songs written by Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova, who also starred in the film, this production seems like it can't miss.  Unfortunately, despite excellent music and vocal and musical performances from an obviously talented cast, this production's book, by Irish playwright Enda Walsh,  seems to assume that the only people who would be interested in this show are those who have seen the movie.  Therefore, there is next-to-no character development, and random scenes inserted that make no sense to anyone not intimately familiar with the source material.  Since this is a show about music and musicians, one would think that story goes out the window then in favor of reworking this as almost a musical revue, rather than a traditional narrative.  That would have worked, since the story is a sweetly simple one and doesn't require much, but the choice was made instead to shoehorn in extra scenes of dialogue, most of which take far longer and meader far more than necessary to advance the plot, and wind up creating something that is just dull and lazy. BWW Review: 5th Avenue's THE LITTLE MERMAID is Swimmingly Magical
by Jay Irwin - Dec 2, 2016

The original animated film of "Disney's The Little Mermaid" is arguably one of the best of the Disney canon. With songs written by the incredible Alan Menken and Howard Ashman it marked the rebirth of the Disney animated musicals. The original conversion of it into A Broadway Musical was not so great. With bad staging and flow, achieving the illusion of swimming by putting the actors on Heelys (shoes with wheels in the heels) so they would glide across stage, and additional songs from Menken and Glenn Slater (owing to the passing of the great Howard Ashman) the show lost much of it's core cleverness and heart in favor of the cliche and gimmicky. Now there's a new version with a reworked book and score and much improved staging which is currently being offered at the 5th Avenue Theatre and while it still may not have that magical greatness of the original film it does manage a magic of its own largely due to some new stage magic and a stellar cast including an Ariel (Diana Huey) who is the most layered, honest, real and still adorable Disney Princess ever.
