Review: LYDIA AND THE TROLL at The Seattle Rep
by Jay Irwin - May 11, 2023

He’s a Seattle favorite. He inspires magic and wonder and just brings a smile to the faces of those who see him. No, I’m not talking about Justin Huertas, composer of the locally (and beyond) renowned musical “Lizard Boy” (about to make its Off-Broadway premiere in NYC, by the way), although I might as well be. No, I’m referring to the Fremont staple of the Troll statue under the Aurora Bridge. That devilish creature clutching a Volkswagen Beetle is beloved by all who pass through. Well now Huertas has come along with his own take on how this stone giant came to be, with his long awaited “Lydia and the Troll”, currently playing at the Seattle Rep. And a few technical issues aside, it’s just more wonderful from this up-and-coming composer who is about to take New York by storm.

Review: Emotionally Impactful World Premiere Play COLEMAN '72 Debuts at South Coast Repertory

In between wiping tears from my eyes, what I witnessed was, by far, one of the most emotionally-impactful dramas I have seen this year, filled with heart-wrenching scenes, nuanced acting choices, and plenty of funny, incredibly relatable moments that pierced through the tension. A unique yet familiar immigrant story, COLEMAN '72 is unforgettable.

Review: Pam Harbaugh's Delightful, Award-Winning CASSEROLE at the Early Bird Dinner Theatre
by Peter Nason - May 9, 2023

I wish more people in the world were like Claire Wilson. As the central character in Pam Harbaugh's endearing, award-winning CASSEROLE, she exudes such enthusiasm, liveliness, acceptance, strength, quirkiness and, best of all, love. Speaking in a midwestern accent with enough 'doncha knows' and 'You betchas' to make Fargo-fans happy, Claire is a gem of a soul, a godly woman who doesn't condemn or even judge. She celebrates her bizarre recipes with a smile and a hug, and she represents the very best of us. She may not be perfect, but she comes mighty close.
