Roger and Hammerstein's The King and I opens on Saturday June 7 at the Metropolitan Ensemble Theatre in Kansas City. Karen Paisley directs the musical, and stars as Anna Leonowens. Tim Braselton provides musical direction and the choreography's designed by Matthew King. The King and I is based on the 1944 novel Anna and the King of Siam by Margaret Landon, which is derived from the memoirs of Anna Leonowens, who was governess to the children of King Mongkut of Siam in the 1860s. As BroadwayWorld previously reported, one of Rodgers & Hammerstein's most beloved musicals, The King and I, will be brought back to the stage by Lincoln Center Theater in Spring 2015. BroadwayWorld has just confirmed that Tony winner Bartlett will direct the revival. Casting has not yet been announced, though Rodgers and Hammerstein veteran Kelli O'Hara, who just concluded a run in Sher's The Bridges of Madison County, has long been rumored to lead the revival. A Woman on Top , the new musical for both sides of the aisle inspired by the current political climate, will have a special industry reading next month. The reading will star Karen Mason -- Drama Desk-nominated Broadway star of Wonderland, Mamma Mia and Sunset Boulevard, as well as a prolific concert and recording artist -- and be directed by Dan Knechtges (Lysistrata Jones, Tony Award nominee for Xanadu choreography). The show has music by Rhonda Kess, and lyrics by Rhonda Kess and Dale Kiken and a book by Dale Kiken. The reading will take place on Wednesday, July 9 at 3:00 PM and Thursday, July 10 at 2:00 PM at The New 42nd Street Studios (229 West 42nd Street). BWW Reviews: Peggy Eason's New Cabaret Show at Don't Tell Mama is a Poignant Message of Personal Empowerment

Peggy Eason is one of those characters who seem to have been made for the New York cabaret scene. She's a bodacious woman who is ubiquitous at the local clubs, possesses a passion for singing, and bills herself as the 'Chocolate Diva,' although on stage she's more like a Red Hot Mama. Eason opened her third solo cabaret show, I'll Show Them All, at Don't Tell Mama on Monday night (she's appearing again at the club on Sunday at 7pm) with the decidedly politically incorrect titled song written especially for her by David Conforte, 'Black, Blind and Beautiful' (Hey, 'African American, Visually Challenged and Beautiful' doesn't have the same ring to it.). But there was little that was incorrect about her fast-paced and entertaining show that was often poignant and funny at the same time. (more...)
