BWW Interview: Choreographer Jonathan Cerullo on LISA AND LEONARDO at NYMF

Choreographer Jonathan Cerullo returns to the New York Musical Festival (NYMF) with the new musical, Lisa and Leonardo. His mentor, acclaimed choreographer Patricia Birch, first introduced him to the festival in its inaugural season. Cerullo had been assisting Birch for thirteen years, and moved into the role of executive producer with her NYMF production of Orphan Train. Subsequently, he went on to stage two other musicals at the festival and also became an evaluator reading new scripts. (more...)

The soft-spoken man sitting opposite me thoughtfully answers my question about the universality of the musical theatre piece in which he stars, Fiddler on the Roof. There is a gentle, heartfelt quality to all his comments, and one understands immediately why Bill Nolte makes an ideal Tevye. The Broadway actor, singer, and visual artist makes his Maine State Music Theatre debut on July 20 in a part he has played twice before, and he waxes eloquent about the experience in Maine and his reunion with director/choreographer Gary John LaRosa and many of the veteran cast members. Reagle Music Theatre to Present CRAZY FOR YOU, 8/4-14

Broadway veteran Kirby Ward will direct and star in Reagle Music Theatre of Greater Boston's Crazy for You, George and Ira Gershwin's musical comedy about a 1930's playboy who just wants to dance.  Crazy for You is the final production in the company's 48th consecutive summer season and will run for 8 performances from August 4-14, 2016 at the Robinson Theatre (617 Lexington St. Waltham, MA, 02452).  In addition to directing, Ward will reprise his spectacular Olivier Award-nominated role as "Bobby Child", the part he originated for the 1993 London premiere.  This high energy production will also star Broadway veteran Beverly Ward (Epic Proportions, Billy Elliot ) as "Polly Baker."  The family-friendly show features flashy tap dance numbers and such memorable songs as 'Someone to Watch Over Me,' 'Embraceable You' and 'I Got Rhythm." Broadway's biggest hit said goodbye to some of it's biggest hitters this week. Hamilton bid adieu to Tony-winning star and writer Lin Manuel Miranda, Tony winner Leslie Odom Jr, Tony nominee Phillipa Soo and 'The Bullet' herself, Ariana DeBose. That's a big change for the blockbuster and has, doubtless, left several Hamilton devotees heartbroken. We figured it'd be fitting to take a look back at some Sessions performances from the Tony-winning score that has wiggled its way into our heads and playlists and won't let go (nor do we want it to).
