Sports Medicine Specialist Dr. Scott Levin Offers Tips for Young Players to Prevent Injuries
by BWW News Desk - Sep 17, 2013

For many years, the number of student athletes playing football at the high school level has far surpassed the number of participants in any other sport. During the 2012-2013 season, more than 1.1 million boys played tackle football and 8,600 girls played tackle or flag football at the high school level, according to the National Federation of State High School Associations. And USA Football estimates that there are 3 million youth football players, age 6-14, in the United States. 'Football is a highly physical sport that combines contact and speed,' says Dr. Scott Levin, orthopaedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist with Somers Orthopaedic Sugery & Sports Medicine Group. 'With more than 4 million young players, it isn't surprising that football is responsible for more injuries than other sports. The good news is that attentiveness to football injury prevention is the primary priority for everyone involved in the sport and with improved standards for play and practice, better protective equipment and conscientious player conditioning, young players can reduce their risk of getting hurt and minimize the severity of injuries that do occur.' BWW Reviews: Hofesh Shecter Gives Master Class to Promote Sun World Premiere at BAM
by BWW News Desk - Nov 20, 2013

Hofesh is a seriously cool guy. Normally I subscribe to the Oscar Wilde School of art criticism, but in this special case, the person behind the art is worth a mention. In a world that is often both glamorously and infamously depicted with power and fame hungry choreographers/directors lording over desperate dancers reduced to human body-things, Hofesh's warm presence is calming in its quiet power, exacting in its purpose without a totalitarian bent. Granted, I've only danced with him for a total of perhaps 6 hours over the course of 4 years, but I stand by the assessment. Hofesh Shecter is really, really cool. (more...)

BWW Reviews: Old Hat But Interesting: Shepard's HEARTLESS at Shepherdstown's CATF
by Jack L. B. Gohn - Jul 16, 2013

I am not sure what Shepard is doing in Shepherdstown. The Contemporary American Theater Festival held there is dedicated to performing 'new American plays.' There's nothing new to me about Sam Shepard's play Heartless; it seems distinctly old hat. I went back to a review I wrote of one of his plays for my college newspaper in 1970, and a number of the things I wrote about that play (The Holy Ghostly) could be said about Heartless. I commented how characters migrate into each other, how they become composites of various characters, how there is no predictable logic to their interactions, and how the drama loses the sense of being story-telling about distinct persons. I compared what Shepard did to abstract painting. And, on the evidence of Heartless, it's still true. (more...)
