BWW Recap: Everyone is an 'Oathbreaker' on GAME OF THRONES
by Jessica Naftaly - May 9, 2016

This week's episode of Game of Thrones aired on Mother's Day, perhaps as an ironic detail of seeding spread throughout the episode in the same vein that Tyrion killed Tywin in season 4 on Father's Day. The episode, entitled “Oathbreaker,” had it's share of deaths and gore, but seemingly shed light on three of our characters whom can be considered “oathbreakers” of sorts. (more...)

BWW Recap: GAME OF THRONES Raises Some Eyebrows in 'Book of the Stranger'
by Jessica Naftaly - May 16, 2016

This week's episode of Game of Thrones just aired, entitled “Book of the Stranger,” a title that had little to do with the episode besides a not so subtle namedrop halfway through. This episode delivered more of what Thrones is seemingly becoming more about; shocks, deaths, quips and nudity, and less of what it originally was; a human and complex drama. Despite Game of Thrones insistence that this year, women will be “on top,” we were once again force fed faux-feminism doubling as “empowerment,” while it double downed on it's misogyny, racism, and plain nonsensical storytelling. BWW Recap: 'The Broken Man' Makes Shocking Return on GAME OF THRONES
by Jessica Naftaly - Jun 6, 2016

This season of Game of Thrones is flying by. Last night's episode entitled “The Broken Man,” brought along a lot of shocks, surprises, and questions as it led us into the final three episodes of the season. We saw old faces return, new faces realized, faces that were not actually faces, and many current faces battling with their great inner struggles. We checked in with a lot of plot lines, but focus of this episode revolved around the new character portrayed by Ian “[It's] just tits and dragons” McShane, of whom the episode title was based upon. BWW Recap: Arya Stark Becomes 'No One' on GAME OF THRONES
by Jessica Naftaly - Jun 13, 2016

As this season of Game of Thrones draws to a close, Episode 8 gave us the required death count, male nudity (was that far away shot of Sandor pissing what you wanted when you called for equal nudity Emilia Clarke?) and debunked a lot of fan theories and book plot lines that have been building up since the first installment, further confirming the show's insistence that it's truly straying away from it's source material. BWW Review: DUSAN TYNEK Casts Magic at New York Live Arts
by Juan Michael Porter II - Jul 8, 2016

Lines of light illuminate the pathway of a woman in flight. Her focus is razor sharp as she surveys men soaring around her in configurations that fluctuate between the flight patterns of birds and planes. Eventually These Men hoist and entangle her in a never-ending series of lifts that keep her suspended as she writes on the air with her body. Skillfully made 'dancing for the sake of dancing' is a special treat to drink in especially when it stars a captivating wellspring of power like Alexandra Berger. For Dušan Týnek Dance Theatre's July 7th opening night concert at New York Live Arts, the radiance that Ms. Berger beamed in this opening piece proved hypnotic. (more...)

BWW Review: The Gateway's Long Island Premiere Of PRISCILLA, QUEEN OF THE DESERT
by Melissa Giordano - Jul 27, 2016

The Gateway's exciting Long Island premiere of Priscilla, Queen Of The Desert went off without a hitch this past weekend at The Patchogue Theatre. Running through August 6th, I really can't stress enough that this musical is incredibly enjoyable and the cast, directed by David Ruttura, is top-notch. There were some changes from the 2011 Broadway production, but your big, glittery heart will definitely be smiling as you leave the theatre. (more...)

BWW Interview: Between Universal and Silly: MSMT Panel Discusses MAMMA MIA!
by Carla Maria Verdino-Sllwold - Aug 18, 2016

"It's the music and the storytelling; the storytelling walks a fine line between being universal and silly. There is a lot of humor and a lot of warmth and so many relationships you can connect with. All that coupled with joyful, upbeat, recognizable music - those crazy tunes by those inspired creators - make for magic." Leading lady Lauren Mufson is explaining what she believes to be the enduring appeal of the joyous ABBA musical, Mamma Mia! In which she is currently playing Donna Sheridan, a role she performed on Broadway and national tour. She is joined by a panel of other artists - actors Ian Knauer (Sam Carmichael), Mylinda Hull (Rosie), Chelsea Williams (Sophie) and stage manager Mark Johnson - all involved with the stunning revival that opened to rave reviews at Maine State Music Theatre on August 11th for the last in the Peek Behind the Curtain series of interviews by Broadway World's Carla Maia Verdino-Sullwold, held at Brunswick's Curtis Memorial Library on August 17th. BWW Interview: Katherine Bottoms of PETER AND THE STARCATCHER at Actors' Repertory Theatre Of Simi
by Cary Ginell - Aug 10, 2016

Today we meet Katherine Bottoms, a young actress who we hope you will be able to see on stage some day before fame and fortune takes her away from us. Katherine was born in Palm Springs but has lived in Santa Barbara most of her life. Her father and three uncles were actors so it was only natural that Katherine would become one as well. She performed in musical theater at Santa Barbara High School and was attending Santa Barbara City College when she decided acting was what she was going to do with her life. While in high school, she got a manager and was driving to auditions in Los Angeles so often, she was missing class, so she put off her career until later. Now, at 23, she feels she is ready, and has been making solid appearances in a number of local productions. Her life has been a procession of one show after another ('my longest break was maybe a month'), with her latest being the ARTS production of Peter and the Starcatcher (see our review in this week's Simi Valley Acorn). In the show, she plays Molly, a wide-eyed, independent 13-year-old girl who embarks on an adventure with her father to deliver a trunk of magic star dust to a far-off island. Katherine's bubbly personality and infectious giggle make it easy to accept her as a teenager, but this is only one aspect of her versatility as an actress. (more...)

BWW Blog: Allison Rambler - Come Look At the Freaks: Who They Are
by Allison Rambler - Aug 10, 2016

As the opening night of The Belmont Theater's 'Side Show' quickly approaches, the activity in the black box studio has increased ten-fold. The set is becoming more elaborate, the swell of music from the orchestra now fills the air, and the costumes are coming together piece by piece. Tech week has begun, and it can both an exciting and somewhat stressful time for any production. As an actor, it can sometimes be difficult to lose sight of your character and even the meaning behind the show itself among the bustle and flurry of tech week. That is why I felt that the time had come to interview some of the actors in our show, in order to provide a bit of insight into their characters and to explain from their perspective the importance of a musical such as 'Side Show.' And for Nik Olson, this was no small task. (more...)

BWW Review: PPT'S Marvelous THE FULL MONTY Presents More Than Eye Candy
by Peggy Sue Dunigan - Aug 1, 2016

'Everything which is necessary, the entire thing, the whole shebang.' This was the original meaning of the British slang term 'the full monty,' before the 1997 British film of the same name. At Peninsula Players (PPT) in August 2016, everything which is necessary, the whole shebang, appears on stage in their marvelous production of The Full Monty. Ever since the 1997 British version heralded this cult classic term, these words have transformed in meaning to mean, 'full nudity.' Which is exactly the meaning Terrence McNally, (book), and David Yazbek (lyrics and music) displayed in their 2000 adaptation musical production reset in Buffalo, New York and applies to six unemployed steel workers. Or named in an alternate title completely reality, 21st century: Desperate Men, Desperate Moves, Desperate Mania. (more...)
