National Endowment for the Arts Chairman Jane Chu has approved more than $82 million to fund local arts projects across the country in NEA's second major funding announcement for fiscal year 2017. Included in this announcement are two Art Works awards to the American Theatre Wing: $35,000 to fund SpringboardNYC and the Theatre Intern Network (through the NEA's Theater and Musical Theater discipline), and $25,000 for production of the 'Working in the Theatre' docuseries (through the NEA's Media Arts discipline). The Outre Theatre Company presents the first production of its 2017/18 season, George Orwell's 1984, in its new home at the recently opened Pompano Beach Cultural Center. The play 1984 is based on George Orwell's dystopian novel published in 1949. In 2005 the novel was chosen by Time magazine as one of the 100 best English-language novels. Many of its terms and concepts, such as Big Brother, doublethink, thoughtcrime, cold war, and Newspeak have permanently entered into common use since its first publication. (more...)

Glorious furniture decorates the stage, with 15th-century Venetian paintings hanging from the walls. A butler pours expensive wine and the Four dinner guests congratulate him on cooking delicious food. Dessert is on its way, as is a night the five of them will never forget. Oliver Cotton's new play is a blend of unexpected twists and dark humour, directed by the seasoned Trevor Nunn, but drama is ultimately sacrificed for didactic discussion of capitalism. (more...)

Embracing Our Differences Receives Tourist Development Cultural/Arts Grant for 2018 Season

The Sarasota County Commission awarded Embracing Our Differences a $50,383 Tourist Development Cultural/Arts grant to help fund its 2018 exhibition season, which runs March 30-May 31 in Sarasota's Island Park. For 14 years, Embracing Our Differences has drawn on the passion and perception of artists, children and others to create powerful statements of diversity and acceptance in its annual outdoor public art exhibition consisting of 45 billboard-sized works of art and accompanying quotes. The scale and impact of this outdoor exhibition has continued to grow, attracting more than 2.5 million visitors since its inception. This exhibit is the heart of a year-round program of activities designed to use art as a catalyst to create awareness of and promote diversity. (more...)
