BWW Reviews: BALLET WEST Debuts at the Joyce Theater in NYCBWW Reviews: BALLET WEST Debuts at the Joyce Theater in NYC
by Sondra Forsyth - Mar 27, 2015

On May 25th 2015, opening night of Ballet West's debut season at the Joyce, three New York premieres and a world premiere showcased the company's admirable command of contemporary ballet. The world-renowned troupe from Salt Lake City does have the classics in its repertoire, but the decision by Artistic Director Adam Sklute to bring his superb dancers to NYC in pieces by Four celebrated if sometimes controversial current choreographers was a wise one. BWW Reviews: JERSEY BOYS - An Electrifying Entertaining EveningBWW Reviews: JERSEY BOYS - An Electrifying Entertaining Evening
by Frank Benge - Mar 27, 2015

The 60's were an exciting time for music in America, due in no small part to the proliferation of groups with amazing vocal harmonies like The Mamas & Papas, The Beach Boys, Spanky & Our Gang and The Four Seasons. JERSEY BOYS is a jukebox musical based on the song catalog of The Four Seasons; however, unlike most jukebox musicals, JERSEY BOYS features an intelligent script where the songs flow with the story instead of being forced into a storyline. I suspect the participation of Rick Elice, who was also one of the scriptwriters for the charming and witty PETER AND THE STARCATCHER had more than a little to do with the intelligence and theatrical storytelling skill on display here. BWW Review: Theatre UCF's Talented Cast Makes Difficult NINE Compelling TheatreBWW Review: Theatre UCF's Talented Cast Makes Difficult NINE Compelling Theatre
by Matt Tamanini - Mar 26, 2015

A musical with Italian opera-inspired songs about a philandering middle-aged film director with writer's block, and the dozens of women that influence his life and work, does not seem like an obvious choice for a college theatre program to undertake. However, under the direction of Earl D. Weaver (who also choreographed), Theatre UCF sinks its collective teeth into the neurotic, misogynistic, and childish mind of Guido Contini in NINE, running through March 29th. This seven-time Tony-winning musical is based on the semi-autobiographical film '8˝' by Italian director Federico Fellini. The cast of 21 women, one man, and Four boys creates an evocative world that seems to hover in the realm between fantasy and reality; much like many of Fellini's films. With striking talent, breath-taking design, and artistic vision, Theatre UCF succeeds where many professional companies would (and have) faltered; despite its unsettling premise, NINE is a joyful reminder of the power of young talent in the arts.
