In a new interview with Wicked star Ariana Grande, Jennifer Coolidge revealed that she would like to return to the stage. The White Lotus star revealed that, while she previously appeared on Broadway in The Women in 2001 and in Elling in 2010, returning to the stage in a 'really cool play' is something that is on her bucket list.

Olivia Newton-John, best known to theatre fans as the star of the iconic 1978 film adaptation of the musical, Grease, has passed away at the age of 73.

Credo sia una grande soddisfazione visto che hai iniziato la tua carriera professionale proprio 10 anni fa. Vogliamo ricordare il tuo debutto? Se non sbaglio i tuoi primi passi in scena sono stati ne Il Bacio della Donna Ragno e Alice Nel Paese Delle Meraviglie. R. È davvero una grande soddisfazione, anche se parte del merito va a Mary Poppins che è un personaggio amatissimo e a tutti i miei colleghi e al team creativo che hanno contribuito alla creazione di uno spettacolo che è rimasto nel cuore di tanti. Sì io ho iniziato a lavorare professionalmente nel 2010, e la mia primissima esperienza è stata al Teatro Comunale di Bologna con Il Bacio della Donna Ragno, titolo che purtroppo è praticamente impossibile da trovare in una stagione teatrale italiana, ma la BSMT, accademia in cui ho studiato, ha instaurato questa magnifica collaborazione col Teatro Comunale che permette agli allievi di lavorare su titoli ricercati, in uno splendido teatro all'italiana con tanto di orchestra sinfonica, costumi e scenografie del teatro. Si crea un connubio tra ente lirico e musical che è davvero rarissimo da trovare altrove. Subito dopo sono entrata a far parte dell'ensemble di Alice nel Paese delle Meraviglie il musical. Abbiamo girato tutta l’Italia per due stagioni ed è stata un'impagabile palestra per me. È D. Prima di arrivare ad interpretare Mary Poppins hai lavorato in famosi musical come Newsies, Footloose, Grease, Les Miserables e altri, tutti di “importazione”. E’ stata una tua scelta prediligere traduzioni di musical inglesi e americani rispetto ai lavori italiani? R. Sì la mia preparazione è improntata sul musical internazionale ma non posso dire di aver scelto di lavorare prevalentemente su questo genere di titoli, chi fa il mio mestiere sa che qui in Italia purtroppo in una stagione teatrale ci sono un paio di produzioni grosse, con una tenitura di almeno qualche mese, e poi una manciata di produzioni più piccole, io semplicemente ho puntato ai lavori più duraturi e prestigiosi che potevo ottenere e ho avuto la fortuna di lavorare per due stagioni con Grease e per una stagione con Footloose per la Stage Entertainment che è una compagnia per cui desideravo tanto lavorare. E prima di questi lavori c'è stato Newsies che invece è durato solo due mesi ma mi ha portato il primo ruolo da protagonista e una stretta collaborazione con gli esponenti di Disney Italia. Al di là di questo Newsies è un titolo che mai pensavo di vedere in cartellone a teatro in Italia, invece è successo e nonostante sia stato un flop al botteghino a causa di una pubblicità poco efficace e di un passa parola lento ad attivarsi, chi lo ha visto è tornato più volte e a distanza di 5 anni ancora lo ricorda con grande affetto, aver fatto parte di una cosa così speciale è un dono immenso per me. Detto questo credo che in Italia gli spettacoli originali di qualità siano molto pochi, forse per mancanza di scuola o semplicemente per mancanza di tempo e finanze, dopotutto i titoli internazionali sono abbondantemente rodati dopo mesi di letture a tavolino, prove, poi anteprime, insomma tutto l'iter che porta uno spettacolo in scena, che all'estero dura appunto mesi se non anni, in Italia invece per gli allestimenti si ha pochissimo tempo. Parlavo con la mia amica Simona Patitucci dopo aver guardato I Sette Re Di Roma con Gigi Proietti, e lei mi raccontava di come lo spettacolo sia stato completato, affinato, plasmato su Gigi e gli altri attori durante le letture a tavolino...questo tipo di approccio al processo creativo per la mia generazione purtroppo è fantascientifico. D. Quali dei titoli che ho citato o altri che hai interpretato ti ha dato le maggiori soddisfazioni o ti è rimasto più nel cuore? E c’è un ruolo che non hai ancora interpretato e a cui aspiri? R. Ognuno dei ruoli che ho interpretato mi ha messa alla prova e mi ha insegnato tantissimo, ma probabilmente quello che più mi è caro è Katherine Plumber in Newsies, perchè è stato il mio primo ruolo e perché quello spettacolo era speciale, non so come altro dirlo. Un ruolo che non ho mai interpretato e che ho sempre voluto fare, ma inizio ad essere vecchiotta, è Maria in West Side Story. D. E poi è arrivata lei, la mitica Mary Poppins. Un ruolo impegnativo sia come interpretazione per le complessità canore e sceniche del personaggio, sia psicologicamente per l’inevitabile confronto con una delle più importanti icone del musical mondiale, Julie Andrews. Raccontaci come ti sei avvicinata a questo ruolo. R. Io sono una nerd di Mary Poppins, è il mio film preferito da sempre, ho letto tutti i romanzi, quando sono arrivata al primo giorno di allestimento avevo già chiaro chi e come doveva essere per me, lei era la migliore amica che avrei tanto voluto vicino da bambina. Sono partita pensando a quello e poi ogni giorno ho costruito il personaggio assieme ai miei colleghi e al team creativo. E' uno di quei personaggi che nell'economia dello spettacolo portano sulle spalle molto peso e non è stato facile ma è anche un tipo di responsabilità con la quale desideravo misurarmi e con qualsiasi altro spettacolo mi sarei sentita in preda al terrore. Con Mary Poppins sapevo di potercela fare perché sin dalle audizioni, sapevo di giocare in casa. E' stato un percorso con alti e bassi chiaramente, lei è praticamente perfetta, io diverse volte ho fatto un gran casino, ma per quanto mi riguarda rimane una sfida vinta. Per quanto riguarda le aspettative altrui e il confronto con Julie Andrews, quella è una battaglia che non ho mai voluto combattere, un paragone che non mi è mai interessato, sapevo che ad alcuni sarei piaciuta e ad altri no, come succede sempre, il mio obbiettivo era solo onorare la MIA Mary Poppins e crescere artisticamente, e l'ho fatto. D. E posso sinceramente dire che ci sei riuscita in pieno. Non voglio ora entrare nel merito della brutta vicenda che ha portato alla cancellazione della ripresa di Mary Poppins a Milano. Una brutta pagina nella storia del musical italiano. Concentriamoci sul bel messaggio di questo musical e dei ricordi che ne porti con te. Vorrei anche ricordare che tutto il cast ha ricevuto il Broadwayworld Regional Award come Miglior Ensemble. R. Con me porto due intensissimi anni della mia vita passati con addosso stivaletti e cappotto blu, porto centinaia di ore passate con i miei colleghi a ridere, piangere, mandarci a quel paese anche, ad abbracciarci...porto il fragore del pubblico e la gioia negli occhi delle persone, porto la prova tangibile di quanto bene possa fare un superfluo pomeriggio a teatro. Sono piena di ricordi meravigliosi e anche piena di pensieri che ancora fanno male. Ma nulla di quanto è successo può cancellare il fatto che Mary Poppins sia stato uno spettacolo che ha alzato l'asticella qualitativa del genere musical in Italia e questo perché era un'imponente, bellissima macchina mossa da artisti eccellenti e da una grande squadra tecnica, che a questa macchina davano cuore e calore. D. Quali sono i tuoi progetti futuri nella speranza che la stagione 2021/2022 possa riprendere senza problemi? R. Il mio progetto futuro è stare bene, nutrire la mia creatività, fare cose che mi rendano felice senza scendere a compromessi con la dignità, il rispetto, la passione e la cura che metto nel mio lavoro e che sono per me fondamentali da parte delle persone con cui collaboro. Tutto ciò che si sposerà con questa linea di pensiero sarà più che benvenuto. Ancora molti complimenti a Giulia Fabbri con la speranza di rivederla presto in scena.

Their shows also include 110 in the Shade, I Do! I Do!, Philemon, Celebration and many more. And celebration is what it's about when Broadway veterans Carole Demas, who originated the role of Sandy in Grease, and Sarah Rice, who originated the role of Johanna in Sweeney Todd, return to celebrate Jones & Schmidt. Demas and Rice have based the show on their 50 years of work and personal relationships with Tom and Harvey. With very special guest Broadway's Hal Robinson who is also a Fantasticks alumni.

On day three, we celebrate one of the first Tony sightings of a Best Featured Actress in a Musical nominee, Lindsay Mendez, who stopped by the 2010 ceremony to back up Sherie Rene Scott in their number from Everyday Rapture.

The Huntington Theatre Company presents the irresistible comedy, Bad Dates, featuring Haneefah Wood (Cassandra in Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike at the Huntington and Blanche in Fox TV's Grease Live! ), written by Theresa Rebeck (creator of NBC's Smash and the Elliot Norton and IRNE Award-winning play Mauritius, produced at the Huntington in 2006), and directed by Jessica Stone (director of Ripcord and Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike at the Huntington). Performances run from January 26 through February 25, 2018 at the Avenue of the Arts / Huntington Avenue Theatre.

Broadway veterans Carole Demas, who originated the role of Sandy in Grease, and Sarah Rice, who originated the role of Johanna in Sweeney Todd, have teamed up to celebrate the music of Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt, composers of THE FANTASTICKS, 110 IN THE SHADE, and I DO! I DO! and more. Demas and Rice have based their show on their 50 years of work and personal relationships with Jones and Schmidt.
