BWW Reviews: They Do Not Serve Who Only Stand And Wait - THE UNDERSTUDY at Everyman
by Jack L. B. Gohn - Sep 2, 2014

We come into life with a desire to do meaningful things, just as an understudy comes into the theater motivated to produce great thespian art. Yet if the understudy is our avatar, how discouraging is his example! For, as in Rebeck's play, the understudy's task is condemned to nearly certain futility. Particularly so on today's Broadway, where plays are too often packaged as vehicles for screen stars whom the audience pays a large premium to see, in productions with limited runs. The setup is almost guaranteed to incentivize producers to demand that the big screen stars appear at every performance, and to incentivize the stars to do so, affording no opportunity to the understudies. BWW Reviews: GCT Brings On Splashy, Roaring THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE
by Don Grigware - Aug 31, 2014

The 1920s were not called the roaring twenties for nothing, and when 'modern' girls came from small towns across America to New York to seek a job, a husband and money, they were an overabundant lot. Take Millie Dillmount (Allyson Spiegelman) for example, who, like many others, sets her eyes, but hardly her heart, on dreamy boss Trevor Graydon (Kelby Thwaits), who also has eyes for Miss Dorothy Brown (Deanna Bakker). Add Jimmy Smith (Jason Webb), who literally ran into Millie on the streets and then pops back into the picture, attempting to win her over romantically. Welcome to modern big city living: take a number, stand in Line. And there's even more discouragement. Apart from New York's degrading social life led by Muzzy Van Hossmere (Julia Marie Rodriguez), Millie is living in a den of iniquity the Priscilla Hotel where hostess Mrs.Meers (Alison England) has a side job selling orphan girls into white slavery. However, despite all these calamities, big and small, there's an air of the ridiculous surrounding them. Based on the 1967 film which starred Julie Andrews, Mary Tyler Moore and Carol Channing, TMM is an ode to madcap senselessness, and go no further than to Glendale and GCT for a nifty revival now onstage through October 4. BWW Recap: Coincidences Don't Exist for INTRUDERS
by Courtney Henley - Aug 30, 2014

Last Saturday, BBC America achieved its highest-rated Saturday evening on record, thanks to “Doctor Who” and a little new show called “Intruders.” The latter's premiere episode, which netted about 1 million viewers in total, was a lot to handle. I get that. But if, like me, you managed to get past (or even, dare I say, enjoy) the convoluted storyLine and kitten murders (RIP Loopy), you were likely running to BBC America's website to watch the second episode. Those questions need answering! (more...)

BWW Recap: OUTLANDER Invites You to Join 'The Gathering'
by Kara McCoy - Aug 30, 2014

The episode begins with a frantic Claire running through the woods, darting around trees and panting heavily, as a sentry keeps his watchful post from above. It's all wracked with tension and suspense, particularly when we recall Claire's ominous testimony at the end of last week's installment: get back to Craigh na Dun, or “die trying.” Run, Claire, run! we simple viewers implore—for all of ten seconds, until we realize, oh but of course, she's just playing a game. We, and the sentry, relax as Ms. Beauchamp emerges from the trees, a gaggle of pint-sized Scots eagerly giggling at her heels. Claire is smoothly transitioning into life at Castle Leoch, it seems—but as always, Claire is really fixated on just one thing: freedom. And no matter how much fun she and the wee bairns appear to be having, she's using the game to better explore the castle grounds. For escape routes. Oh, girl, that is clever. (more...)
