Ever wait in line?

What are you waiting for?

Who are these other people?

Are they your friends? Enemies?

Is someone trying to cheat you. seduce you, cut ahead?

Who can you trust?

LINE, Israel Horovitz's classic, existential, dark comedy explores these questions in this biting, absurdist allegory that perfectly satirizes the now-timeless theme of America's constant desire and struggle to be in first place.

BWW Review: WET's Creepy and Sometimes Confusing THE THINGS ARE AGAINST USBWW Review: WET's Creepy and Sometimes Confusing THE THINGS ARE AGAINST US
by Jay Irwin - May 2, 2016

Most often when you go see a play there is a very plain narrative, a beginning, a middle and an end to convey your story. Some plays out there, however, make you work a little harder either with non-Linear structure or an existential bent. And then there are some plays that go so far that you walk out of them thinking "What the hell did I just see?" Well Washington Ensemble Theatre's creepy and surreal "The Things Are Against Us", currently playing at 12th Avenue Arts, is firmly footed in that second camp but often dipped its toe into the third which resulted in a show that was creepy and fun but left my theater companion and me with a car ride home filled with statements like, "Well, I think this is what happened." Cynthia-Reeves to Display Sarah Amos Collography Exhibit, TodayCynthia-Reeves to Display Sarah Amos Collography Exhibit, Today
by BWW News Desk - May 2, 2016

Landscape is not merely the world we see, according to master printmaker Sarah Amos; it is a way of seeing the world, both real and imagined.  For over thirty years, Amos's marks on paper, a visual language of dotted Lines traversing across the picture plane, reveal windows into her life's journey to the States, with traces of aboriginal and cultural identity never lagging far behind.  In Amos' words, 'I record, observe, assemble and archive organic objects, cultural relics, places, tools and experiences, creating a highly personalized iconography.  My drawings, paintings, and prints are not only visual diaries, but a language of the real, the imagined, and the half-forgotten'. BWW Review: The Moving Company's New Work EVERY SENTENCE IS FOR THE BIRDS Speaks to the Nature of Science and Art and What it Means to be HumanBWW Review: The Moving Company's New Work EVERY SENTENCE IS FOR THE BIRDS Speaks to the Nature of Science and Art and What it Means to be Human
by Jill Schafer - May 2, 2016

The Moving Company is a unique theater company in this town of over 70 theater companies. The descendant of the beloved departed Theatre de la Jeune Lune, MoCo's productions are typically original ensemble-based creations. Like the proverbial box of chocolates, you never know what you're gonna get with them: over-the-top ridiculous comedy, lovely achingly beautiful poignancy, or more likely, somewhere in between. Their new piece EVERY SENTENCE IS FOR THE BIRDS falls more towards the sublime end of the ridiculous-to-sublime spectrum that they cover. The two-person show about a scientist and her subject is both simple and profound, dealing with topics no less than the nature of science and art, and what it means to be human. Words are inadequate to describe The Moving Company's work, so you should just go see it for yourself. I guarantee it's unlike anything you will see on any other stage in town. (more...)

BWW Review: Ocean State Ends Season with Effervescent ANYTHING GOESBWW Review: Ocean State Ends Season with Effervescent ANYTHING GOES
by Robert Barossi - May 2, 2016

Like any art form, theatrical musicals can run the gamut in tone, style, tenor and execution. You can find everything from dark, serious brooding drama to light-as-a-feather, fluff-filled entertainments. Which is not to say that either side of the spectrum is better or worse than the other, there are highs and lows at both ends of the spectrum. When it comes to the lighter, fluffier fare, there are few as effervescent and entertaining as Cole Porter's Anything Goes, now receiving a top-notch production at Ocean State Theatre Company. Zimmerli Art Museum to Display Woodcut Prints from Helen Hyde, Bertha LumZimmerli Art Museum to Display Woodcut Prints from Helen Hyde, Bertha Lum
by BWW News Desk - May 2, 2016

New Brunswick, NJ – The historic re-establishment of trade between Japan and Western nations in 1853 also greatly influenced art and culture throughout the second half of the 19th century. Exhibitions at museums and world's fairs introduced Asian artists and traditions in North America and Europe, where artists enthusiastically embraced subjects, compositions, and materials they rarely – if ever – had seen before. The Zimmerli Art Museum's new exhibition “Infinite Opportunities Offered in Color”:  Prints by Helen Hyde and Bertha Lum, on view through July 31, features 35 works by two American artists who, in turn, disseminated these artistic developments to audiences back home. Both artists spent considerable time living abroad in Asia and recognized the unique artistic possibilities for representing traditional aspects of life in an area of the world that was rapidly modernizing. They mastered complex color printing techniques and depicted aspects of Japanese and Chinese culture that essentially had been absent in the West. Because these artists generally are presented in survey exhibitions, this is a rare opportunity to view a significant group of works by either artist.“Infinite Opportunities Offered in Color” also complements other works on view from the Zimmerli's permanent collection, including examples of the Japonisme movement and a gallery that commemorates Rutgers' historic relationship with Japan.   (more...)

BWW Recap: Jon Snow Heads 'Home' in GAME OF THRONESBWW Recap: Jon Snow Heads 'Home' in GAME OF THRONES
by Jessica Naftaly - May 2, 2016

Episode two of Game of Thrones just aired tonight and with it, we got a lot of what we had last week, shocking deaths and violence, but we also got the answer to everyone's burning question. Is Jon Snow really dead? The episode, entitled “Home” not only was named so because of the word being dropped quite often in dialogue, but several of our primary characters dealt with their families, identities and “homes”. I would say this is one of the closes instances we've gotten on this show of having the title actually play a key role in the total events of the narrative, but alas, it still struggled to remain thematically relevant, despite it's frequent usage.  (more...)
