A love story between a man and woman, East and West, about the mundane and the monumental, the personal and the political, the dust behind the bed and the Iranian baby boom.

Domestic Labour is a darkly humorous love story told through the nitty gritty of daily life, revealing stories about past girlfriends, marriage, Islamic law and Brigitte Bardot as the man and his absent wife negotiate the very domestic battle over who does the washing up.

Inspired by Feminism and the women's movement in the late 19th and 20th centuries, the show explores, from a male point of view, the Suffragette Movement, WWII and its effect on women and work, the Iran-Iraq war and the huge effect the invention of the bicycle had on the emancipation of women.

Writer Mehrdad Seyf, visual artist Chris Dobrowolski and co-devisors Chris. Dugrenier, Nicki Hobday and Sara Zaltash reinterpret not only the physical functions of everyday household appliances but also the power games of equality.

Darkly humorous and visually rich Domestic Labour highlights the absurd details of our daily lives and their resonance within the wider world.

"I think the bicycle has done more to emancipate women than any one thing in the world... It gives her a feeling of self-reliance and independence the moment she takes her seat; and away she goes, the picture of untrammeled womanhood." - Susan B Anthony, American Civil Rights Leader, 1896

30 Bird is an award winning performance company based at home and thinking with Cambridge Junction. Each one of their projects is unique - each taking a different form, often using the detail of autobiographical stories to explore global issues pertinent to contemporary society. They collaborate with practitioners from a variety of disciplines including architecture, science, the visual arts, dance, music, theatre and film. Past Edinburgh shows include Poland 3 Iran 2 and Plastic. 30bird.org

Domestic Labour has been selected for Escalator East To Edinburgh. Each year Escalator East to Edinburgh helps artists and arts organisations to raise their profile and perform to new audiences as part of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
