A program of the Sarasota Orchestra, student participants in the three week long Sarasota Music Festival (SMF) attend master classes and coaching sessions, participate in the SMF orchestra, create outreach concerts for the local community and perform chamber music.

Sarasota Music Festival Week Two (June 12 - 18, 2017) Highlights:

§ Artist Showcase 2: A Feast of Music

Thursday, June 15, 4:30 pm - Holley Hall, Tickets from $27

The second artist showcase of the Festival features Schubert's Fantasie in F minor, a piece that will highlight the collaboration of Music Director Jeffrey Kahane and faculty artist, scholar and acclaimed pianist Robert Levin.

"What a testament to the primacy of our beloved Festival that my good friend Bob Levin and I will be sharing not only the stage, but a piano in performance for four hands. I know this will be a very special moment for me, and I am delighted that our audience will share it with us," said Kahane.

Also programmed are compositions by Telemann, Dohnányi.

§ Festival Concert 2: Shimmering Summer

Friday, June 16, 8:00 pm - Sarasota Opera House - Tickets from $27

The second mixed student/ faculty chamber concert of the Festival opens with Summer Music by Samuel Barber. Other highlights include Mendelssohn's String Quintet No. 2 and Brahms' Piano Quartet No. 2.

§ Levin Lecture

Saturday, June 17, 1:00pm - Holley Hall, Tickets from $5

Informative and entertaining talk providing insight by acclaimed scholar, pianist and educator, Robert Levin.

§ Saturday Symphony 2: Mostly Mozart

Saturday, June 17, 8:00 pm - Sarasota Opera House, Tickets from $32

Under the baton of Brett Mitchell, Alexander Kerr, Festival faculty and concertmaster of the Dallas Symphony joins as soloist to perform Mozart's Violin Concerto No. 3.

"Alex is representative of what makes the SMF faculty so special: an accomplished soloist, conservatory professor and concertmaster. What a treat to have both Brett and Alex perform during the Festival," said Kahane.

Additional orchestral highlights include Mozart's Symphony No. 40 and Stravinsky's Concerto in E-flat Major, "Dumbarton Oaks."

§ Rising Stars 2

Sunday, June 18, 3:00 pm - Holley Hall, Tickets from $10

Festival students perform Chamber works of their choice; repertoire and students to be announced.

About the Sarasota Music Festival:

For three weeks each June, guest artists and student musicians come together in Sarasota to study and perform chamber music. Nearly 500 students worldwide audition to participate in the Sarasota Music Festival each year, but only 60 are accepted. These students work side-by-side with a group of 45 master faculty musicians.

Co-founded by Paul Wolfe, the Sarasota Music Festival began in 1965 as a one-week event with seven guest mentors. In just two years, the Festival grew to three weeks and drew students from across the United States. In 1984, it was designated by the Florida State Legislature as the "Official Teaching and Performing Festival of the State of Florida."

Now in its first season under Artistic Director Jeffrey Kahane, there are more than 45 guest artists, including many of the festival's own alumni. These masters represent nearly all major American orchestras and a cross-section of renowned music schools, conservatories and institutes of music.
