What did our critic think of THE HELLO GIRLS at Terrace Theater/Kennedy Center? The Hello Girls tells the notable story of the 223 female telephone operators who served in the Army Signal Corps during World War I.

TINA: The Tina Turner Musical came blazing in like a bolt of lightning with thunderous applause on opening night at the Ohio Theatre, just as most of our state was under severe tornado warnings.  TINA tells the remarkable story of the musical legend, and shares it all – the good, the bad, and the ugly – so be prepared for some cringe-worthy moments of raw and jolting physical, verbal and emotional abuse.  Despite that, TINA also shares her triumphant journey of resilience, redemption, freedom, and ultimate superstardom.  ritic think of TINA at Ohio?

Tom Wingfield opens Tennessee William’s haunting memory play with this admonition: “Yes, I have tricks in my pocket, I have things up my sleeve. But I am the opposite of a stage magician. He gives you the illusion that has the appearance of truth. I give you truth in the pleasant disguise of illusion.” What follows in this stunning production is a sometimes surreal, always emotionally devastating remembrance of a broken family teetering on the edges of disillusion and the hope of salvation.

The Blue Strawberry in Midtown St. Louis welcomed John Lloyd Young on Wednesday evening for the first of two Shows.Highlights from his set included a soulful performance of the R & B classic “Show and Tell,” and a haunting introspective rendition of The Hollies song “The Air That I Breathe.” To say that Young’s voice is special is an understatement. His phrasing is impeccable. His vowels are open, pure, and rich. Young’s tenor is lush and resonant with pitch-perfect head and chest voice and a falsetto that soars. His vocal stylings are magnificent.  

Each cast member excels in creating a strong, distinct persona that adds up to a sizzling ensemble.

Nikolai Gogol's 1836 satire The Government Inspector caused a stir for calling out the Russian government's corruption. It's easy to see why Peter Myers wanted to bring its relevant story to the stage two centuries later, but the biting commentary under the silliness is lost in translation in this chaotic production in spite of the talent onstage.

Pub garden theatre specialist Open Bar Theatre has returned for a spring season with a deft and slightly chaotic version of William Thackeray's Vanity Fair. Dealing with the fortunes of two young women, the story explores early 19th-century English society, specifically how money and ambition can define a person's fate. 

The strapline for Stephanie Ware’s WHOA MAMA! had me intrigued – a one woman comedy about a 40-something woman and her choice to remain childfree. There’s certainly no shortage of rhetoric on this subject, particularly on social media where the childfree “movement” has a real chokehold. But the concept of a clownish comedy that explores the “opinions, arguments and science” behind this choice felt like a fresh take.

Hayao Miyazaki’s legacy is one for the ages. The co-founder of Studio Ghibli revolutionised the Western consumption of anime and set a new standard for Japanese animated films. London isn’t a stranger to the stage adaptations of his creations: a major example is My Neighbour Totoro, which took up shop at the Barbican to great acclaim last year and has already announced a West End run for next year.

This musical would flounder without a dynamic leading woman. In this case, TINA has two – Zurin Villanueva (who performed in the May 7 show) and Ari Groover because of the energy and vocal demands of the role.

What did our critic think of CORIOLANUS at Portland Center Stage?

54 Below honored legendary lyricist and composer Sheldon Harnick on Tuesday April 30th with two touching tribute shows. To Life: A Celebration of Sheldon Harnick’s Legacy on His 100th Birthday featured a 7 pm and 9:30 pm show, each with a completely different lineup of celebrated singers who were touched in some way by Harnick’s work.

So, even with one major problem, the muddy sound denign, whether to go see this show is no mystery. The solution: catch it while it’s here.

'Reefer Madness' is an incredibly smart and pointed show impersonating something far more pedestrian, and NextStop Theatre Company manages to capture this perfectly without ever feeling overproduced or trite.

Michael is Roman Banks with a spot-on almost miraculous personification of the Ing of Pop.  The dancing, the voice, the persona.  They are all there.  Banks offers a remarkable performance.  

Written and performed by Vitor Rocha, the new musical Donatello invites the audience to delve into the memories of important moments in all of our lives. The show provides a fun and exciting experience. Through an intimate proposal that explores the deepest human feelings, the show addresses universal themes such as love, family, memory and aging.
