Review: Catherine Russell Is Cheery & Charming at Jazz At Lincoln Center
by Rob Lester
- Apr 4, 2024
Singer Catherine Russell's joy is a joy to behold. Get a new appreciation for old songs with pep that swings. She won't let songs from a bygone era be gone. She brings 'em back with a breezy swinging style that proves there's life and juice in the oldies. And she's got a gem of a band backing her up to bring them back to life.

by Evan Henerson

A second cousin once removed to William Rose’s GUESS WHO’S COMING TO DINNER, ONE OF THE GOOD ONES finds the highly assimilated, upper middle class Gomez family losing their collective sanity when their daughter, Yoli, brings home Marcos, a man who, to her parents’ minds at least, qualifies as an “other.” A sweet, occasionally tart new play.

Review: STEW at ACT Theatre
by Jay Irwin
- Mar 22, 2024
I like to think, Dear Reader, that I don’t need to have the meaning/plot/message of a show spoon fed to me. But sometimes, as with Zora Howard’s “Stew” currently playing at ACT, I could use a bit of clarity. I’m not saying the show was completely confusing, not by a long shot, just a few elements in it as well as that ending that left me questioning what I just saw. Then again, sometimes those shows can be the most fun afterwards, as my theater companion and I got to try and decipher what it meant to us.
Review: RUBABOO Delights Audiences at Edmonton's Citadel Theatre
by Sarah Dussome
- Feb 20, 2024
This 95-minute production is a whimsical blend of music and storytelling. There’s nothing more comforting than a home-cooked meal. In this case, it’s a rubaboo- a hearty stew simmering over a glowing campfire. The founder of the feast is Andrea Menard, a Métis singer-songwriter hailing from Flin Flon, Manitoba (Treaty 1 Territory). Her colourful cabaret, Rubaboo (the Michif word for “leftover stew”), is a whimsical, 95-minute musical feast steeped in storytelling, dance, and culture.
