What is there to say about Puccini’s TOSCA that hasn’t been said in the last hundred-plus years since its premiere in Rome (to echo the locations in the opera)? It is a marvel of brevity, with librettists Illica and Giacosa shaving locations, characters and action from the original play, written by the French dramatist Victorien Sardou for the legendary actress Sarah Bernhardt, without sacrificing its impact. It has a gorgeous score, but for a grand opera, it is also quite intimate, with the action mainly revolving around three characters who carry their emotions on their sleeves and interact like their lives depend on it.

A trio of commanding sopranos share the role of opera’s quintessential diva. Sondra Radvanovsky, Elena Stikhina, and Aleksandra Kurzak star in David McVicar’s thrilling production, sharing the stage with tenors Brian Jagde, Joseph Calleja, and Roberto Alagna as the painter-revolutionary Cavaradossi and baritones George Gagnidze and Željko Lučić as the vile police chief Scarpia. Yannick Nézet-Séguin and Carlo Rizzi share conducting duties.

PBS has announced the premiere date of two new Great Performances at the MET Specials. Three Divas At Versailles stars Isabel Leonard, Nadine Sierra, and Aileen Perez. Additionally, a special starring Sondra Radvanovsky and Piotr Beczala will premiere as well.

Lyric Opera of Chicago has recorded Ruggiero Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci on film. Last week, the company announced that registration was open for audiences to secure free links to screen the new Pagliacci made at the Lyric Opera House. The George London Foundation for Singers will present two events at New York's Morgan Library and Museum in the 2021-22 season: the finals of the 50th annual George London Foundation Competition for American and Canadian opera singers, postponed from early 2021, and a recital by the exciting young tenor and 2017 George London Award winner Aaron Blake, with pianist Ken Noda, marking the resumption of the foundation's annual recital series.

With Opening Night approaching and the return of live opera on the horizon, the Met has announced the end of its Nightly Met Opera Streams, the extremely popular series of encore Live in HD presentations and classic telecasts streamed on its website during the Covid-19 closure.

New York City Opera has announced the appointment of internationally acclaimed conductor and pianist Constantine Orbelian as the company’s Music Director and Principal Conductor.  Maestro Orbelian will conduct his first NYCO production this summer when the company performs a newly created version of Rigoletto on Sunday, August 29.

Wagnerians in Concert features sopranos Christine Goerke and Elza van den Heever, tenor Andreas Schager, and baritone Michael Volle, live from the Hessisches Staatstheater, in Wiesbaden, Germany, on May 8. Three Divas showcases sopranos Ailyn Pérez and Nadine Sierra and mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard, live from the Opéra Royal-Château de Versailles, in France, on May 22. Both concerts will be streamed live on the Met's website at 1pm EST/7pm CET, and will then be available on demand for 14 days.
