The Music Center today announced the launch of The Music Center On Location, a new initiative that takes the performing arts center's artistic vision beyond the places and spaces of its Downtown Los Angeles home and into diverse venues and locales throughout greater Los Angeles.  With The Music Center On Location, The Music Center will curate and present distinctive artistic content in locations outside its 22-acre campus and bring its innovative, creative approach to the arts to a wider audience.  This program will expand the performing arts center's focus beyond the presentation of the world-class artistic programming it currently offers on the stages of its iconic theatres and outdoor plaza to events and performances outside of its physical footprint.  The Music Center On Location launches this summer with programming at The Ford Theatres (the Ford) and Grand Park, followed by an engagement in the fall at The Culver Studios as part of the performing arts organization's internationally acclaimed Glorya Kaufman Presents Dance at The Music Center series.  (more...)

The 33rd annual Helen Hayes Awards will be celebrated at the historicLincoln Theatre at 7:30 pm on May 15, with accomplished actors E. Faye Butler and Lawrence Redmond as hosts. The line-up of award presenters includes artistic leaders from across the Washington region, highlighting the depth and breadth of a theatre community recognized worldwide for the quality and diversity of its work. Following the awards, a roof-raising dance party gets underway at the world-renowned 9:30 Club. Both events honor 236 Helen Hayes Award nominees drawn from 200 eligible productions presented in 2016. Tickets for the combined Awards Ceremony and Dance Party are $275 for premium seating, $150 for balcony seating, and can be purchased online. (more...)

The Schimmel Center at Pace University presents two performances of Immortal Chi: A Warrior's Quest for Balance-a fusion of Chinese martial arts and acrobatics, accompanied by an all-female percussion ensemble-on Friday, May 5 at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, May 6 at 7:30 p.m. The production, directed by Erick Villeneuve (Era, Intersection of Time, Kaleido, Eqi), is full of stunts, traditional weaponry, and feats of human endurance, and tells the story about a Tai-Chi master and his challenge to re-gain his inner energy and life force, casting a new perspective on Chinese theatrical history. The Minnesota Orchestra today announced plans for the 2017-18 seasons of its Live at Orchestra Hall, Holiday Concerts and Jazz in the Target Atrium series. Live at Orchestra Hall, a series of popular music, jazz, Broadway classics, movie scores, world music and other genres, is led by Principal Conductor of Live at Orchestra Hall Sarah Hicks. She conducts many of the series' concerts, including those with Rufus Wainwright and Cloud Cult, return performances with Pink Martini and Ben Folds, and screenings of four major feature films, with scores performed live. The Holiday season includes December concerts that range from a newly created Minnesota Orchestra Holiday Show, led by Hicks, directed by Peter Rothstein and featuring new work by storyteller-playwright Kevin Kling; to the return of Merry and Bright: A Big Brassy Christmas with Charles Lazarus; to the Orchestra's first-ever performance at Orchestra Hall of Bach's glorious Christmas Oratorio, led by beloved German conductor Helmuth Rilling.
