State Theatre's THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST Breaks Box Office Records

State Theatre Company's season of The Importance of Being Earnest, which closed last Saturday 16 August, has broken the Company's box office record, taking over $424,000 and becoming the highest grossing production in its history. This follows the record-breaking season of Brief Encounter in September last year which was then trumped by that of Neighbourhood Watch in April this year. (more...)

Official: Helen Mirren Set to Return to Broadway in Peter Morgan's THE AUDIENCE; Dates and Theater Set

Academy Award winner Helen Mirren will return to Broadway this spring as Elizabeth II in Peter Morgan's THE AUDIENCE, directed by two-time Tony Award winner Stephen Daldry. The limited engagement will play at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre, 236 West 45th Street. Previews forTHE AUDIENCE begin on February 17 and opening night is March 8. It will run through June 28 2015. Peter Brook's THE SUIT Comes to Adelaide Festival Centre, Oct 1-12

In a coup for South Australia, it has been announced that the great British director Peter Brook's production of The Suit will play exclusively in Adelaide for State Theatre Company in October. Exclusivity for the Australian premiere has been secured with the support of the South Australian Tourism Commission, which will also support a targeted marketing campaign to theatre-goers from Melbourne and Sydney. Today OZ, Nashville's first contemporary arts center, announces its 2014-15 season, which runs September 12, 2014 - June 27, 2015. The season is bookended by premieres, beginning with two performances (September 12 & 13) of Tim Robbins' interpretation of A Midsummer Night's Dream, produced and acted by the company he founded and leads, The Actors' Gang, in the production's first U.S. engagement outside of the company's home theater in Los Angeles. OZ's 2014-15 program will conclude with the world premiere (June 18-20) of Memory Rings, the latest multi-media stage production from innovative New York City-based puppetry collective Phantom Limb Company. BWW Reviews: Poor Shadows Stages the Often Forgotten ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA

It's no secret that Antony and Cleopatra is one of Shakespeare's most neglected works. Despite its well-known characters (who doesn't know who Cleopatra was?), the play is rarely produced. In a program note, Poor Shadows of Elysium's Artistic Director, Kevin Gates, suggests that the play's decline in popularity stems from the gender politics of the Victorian Era. 'I've always seen this as Cleopatra's play,' says Gates. 'Peter Brook observed that many Victorian actors felt the same, and that's one reason why the play fell out of favor during the Victorian era. No actor worth his salt wanted to be upstaged by an actress.' Gates and Brook are both right. This is indeed Cleopatra's play, especially in Poor Shadow's current production. (more...)
