The Greensboro Arts Alliance and Residency (GAAR), under the Artistic Direction of Sabra Jones, is proud to announce its 1st Annual Opera Festival as part of the 2017 Summer Season in Vermont. Heidi Lauren Duke choreographs & directs Mezzo-Soprano Martha Prewitt in Lee Hoiby's comedy Bon Appetit!, written about the legendary chef Julia Child, from June 30 - July 5, 2017, at the Town House (20 Church St.)  in Hardwick, Vermont.  The return of opera performance marks a full circle moment for Hardwick's historic Town Hall which was, in fact, built as an opera house in 1898. A mother's bitterness colors the lives of her two high school-aged daughters in Paul Zindel's 1971 Pulitzer Prize-winning "The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds", coming to Catskill's Bridge Street Theatre for eight performances July 6-16. Called "the most compelling work of its kind since Tennessee Williams' 'The Glass Menagerie'", this poignant and lyrical drama will be performed by a cast of five brilliant female actors, led by Bridge Street favorite Roxanne Fay ("Home Fires Burning", "Dream Child", "Upon This Rock") in the role of Beatrice Hunsdorfer. Using this logic, it makes sense that many plays and musicals often deal with the challenging topic of illness and death. Musicals such as NEXT TO NORMAL and HEATHERS take very different approaches to the subject of our own mortality, and there are a myriad of plays that attempt to tackle the issue. Little Theatre of Mechanicsburg has chosen one such play, a drama entitled THE SHADOW BOX, and through this show continues to prove that they deserve a bigger spotlight than the small, tucked away world of Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania can provide for them.
