by BroadwayRadio - Jun 9, 2018

On BroadwayRadio's third annual Tony Omnibus episode, we look to fill in some of the gaps that have popped up in the theatre community's coverage of the award season. So often our focus during this five-week buildup to Sunday night's ceremony is on the performers and the writers who are front and center during this process. However, today, we are talking to two Tony nominees whose impact on their shows is no less important, despite the fact that they aren't the people getting the glossy stories in the New York and theatre media. We also talk to a journalist who brings important context to the New York theatre community.

BWW Review: TRANSLATIONS, National Theatre
by Marianka Swain - May 31, 2018

It begins with deep breathing, in order to access words that hold unimaginable power. And Ian Rickson's exquisite production of Brian Friel's masterpiece maintains that space throughout: for words to breathe and simmer, to hang in the air, and for us to understand how vital language is not just as a means of communication, but identity, nationality, and a rich heritage at risk of extinction.

BWW Review: RED, Wyndham's Theatre
by Nicole Ackman - May 15, 2018

It's easy to imagine that a play that explores the meaning of art could become bogged down in artistic pretention. However, Josh Logan's Red escapes this as the physicality of the art itself gives it action to bolster its theoretical talk. Alfred Molina reprises his role as the artist Mark Rothko and Alfred Enoch gives a wonderful performance as his assistant, Ken. Once again under Michael Grandage's direction, the show manages to build many humorous moments despite its serious subject matter.

Travesties Design Statements
by Roundabout Theatre Company - May 9, 2018

Tim Hatley/Costume and Set Design My starting point as a designer is always to read the play, and in the case of Travesties, which is a complex play, it required careful reading and thought to begin to understand the threads and layers of the writing, and talking closely with the director, Patrick Marber. It seemed to me that our production needed a strong yet simple approach to the design. The shifting of time and location is clear in the writing and did not need physical transitions to interrupt the flow. Our space is both present and memory, library and apartment, and allows for characters to appear and disappear within. The costumes are rooted strongly in the period, and their palette was developed in tandem with the development of the space. Cross references to Oscar Wilde's play, The Importance of Being Earnest, were an enjoyable anchor to designing the play.
